I understand this board is raw vegan, however if someone is asked how they construct their diet or where they get their protein from, are they just not going to answer? No one is being forced to take on another style of living or pressured to use animal products. Simply stating that someone eats such foods, should not intimidate or create conflict. In other words, back off and stop being so tight about this petty issue that is not going to harm you. Guest guest
Hi, I was a meat eater until about your age too, it's been eight years now. The PETA site has a lot of info on this and they have footage of how factory-farmed animals live, hen factories, etc, and you can get a free copy of their vegetarian starter kit http://www.peta.org/about/faq-veg.asp. I know a popular book is diet for a small planet. You might want to start by getting a veggie cookbook and change a few meals a week to see how you liek it. I like The Meatless Gourmet: Easy Lowfat Favorites and The Meatless Gourmet: Favorite Recipes from Around the World, they both have easy to make recipes using ordinary ingredients. Good luck! - visual_infinityuk Sunday, September 19, 2004 4:32 PM (unknown) Dear Group,I understand this is a group for recipe exchange but I would like to find some help on my queries below and have been unsuccesful in finding a decent forum to discuss them in so I was hoping some of you could contribute towards them since they affect most vegetarians in some way.I have recently given considerable thought to becoming a vegetarian, I have pondered over being one since I was about 13, but I am 22 now and have rcently considered this issue in light of some disturbing images I saw on TV over animal testing (a monkey with some of its brain exposed!!!) and on battery chickens and now feel I can successfully plan my own diet. The reason for wanting to be a vegetarian is partly logic, it is not logical to destroy one life to support another imo, also of compassion over the disgusting living conditions battery farm chickens have to be put through amongst other animals.I dont think I will have a problem switching to being a vegetarian (as some people I know are suggesting it will be a big lifestyle change lmao) because I am not the type to look at a BBQ and think "oh, I'd love to bite into one of those juicy burgers" lol. However, I have in thinking about this issue over the last two days had some curious thoughts over what I may or may not eat on my grounds for not eating meat and whether or not for example I may wear leather shoes (I dont recall seeing any decent shoes for example of any other material... btw - this reminds me someone recently suggested I am over analytical which I think is quite true ;o)If I am going to be against killing and eating cows for example over the logic as suggested, then killing a cow for its leather is even less justified. Also, is it ok to say I dont eat cow on the basis it is not a prefered flavour since I am not aware of whether or not cows are treated poorly??Have any of you advice on where I may read about what people in the vegetarian world are saying about these issues? Guest guest
I suggest that you tackle this on the basis of the health benefits of meat of all kinds. the thing about being and becoming a vegetarian, is that this must be tackled from a knowledge of the health benfits to you standpoint. Once you discover the overall benefits of a vegetarian diet and the numerous ways that you can get protein aside from dairy and meat ( none of which you will find in standard industry material for obvious reasons), you'll be on a knowledge track from which nobody can derail you. I also suggest that you read materials on the myriad of ways that you can become a vegetarian ( there are levels for sure). You'll find a lot of this stuff in health food stores. If you study very closely the emerging FOOD TRIANGLE, you'll find more and moer that meat is being relagated to fewer and fewer servings. The science of it ( hwen pure scientist become involved ) is very difficult to refute. You'll then be prepared to shop differently, as well as treat your freinds how to treat you. Just as they respect non-alcohol drinkers and non-smokers on the point of principle, they come to respect your new and permanent choices as well. When you are informed , there is no need to explain. Most folks already know that meat and dairy are high cholesterol content foods, but it is often difficult to reconcile this with the strong draw and attachment to culture and tradition. Your grandmother and mother will almost disown you if you waver in any way. Consistency is the watch word as in all things. People respect consistency over the long haul, and that is the most difficult for most newbie vegetarians who are trying to become principled in their approach. You must ween yourself slowly from meats starting first with the worst, beef, then pork, then on down the line over a period of years. If you are like me , you'll do it overnight once you get sufficint knowledge form your own research and readings. Colds, flus, sinus conditions, and other forms of mucus generations will be the first to leave you. The new discipline will help you in all other areas of your life, once you internalize the principle of discipline, then apply it to other areas of your life that need changing. Off my soap box now. Good Luck! My friend also just started a vegetarian group in Miami and I wanted to see how I can help her better her group. I'm really not a full pledge vegetarian as if now. I use to be back when I was living with my parents. It was kind of hard not to be because everywhere I go people was only serving vegetarian food. For example, the private school I attended for seven years only serve vegetarian food for lunch and the cook made it taste great so I was hooked. Anyway if you would like to find out more about me on a personal level just look at my profile. Later I will begin to post recipes but there is one recipe I will not post yet in hopes that I might be able to publish it in a well known cookbook. (Hint: Chilli) Oh I'm doing a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner for my friends so wish me luck!! Your new member, Latice

Guest guest
Hi Anna, Welcome to the group! I've been vegan for 8 years and I find it very easy, - I would advice you to get in touch with organizations like Viva and The Vegan Society and get yourself some simple recipe books,- Viva have a good one for people starting out on the vegan path,- after 8 years I've become a very good vegan chef! Its important tp get some good nutritonal imformation aswell,-if there's anythingelse you like to know just ask, Joanne - Anna Midgley Sunday, December 26, 2004 10:25 PM (unknown) Hey! Just thought I'd reply to the questions you sent me! 1. My name is Anna Midgley, better known as Spanna. 2. I'm 18 years old, soon to be 19 in January. 3. I'm sad to say that I only know one vegan, who is very strict about his food, clothing etc. and only two vegetarians who are a bit rubbish. They still have Sunday roast because they'd miss their roast chicken if they didn't. 4. I'm not actually a vegan yet, which is kind of why I've signed up to this, because I needed help with it. I have been vegetarian for, what will be 6 years, in January. 5. I'm a vegetarian because I believe that it's wrong for any animal to suffer unnecessarily. It is unnecessary because I don't need meat, most people don't need meat, to live and I've come to believe that things such as milk, cheese and other such products are also unnecessary. This sounds really bad but I actually started vegetarianism as a bet that I couldn't last without meat for a week and I just wanted to see how long I could carry it on for. It has become very much an ethical thing for me now and I'd rather chew off my own arm than have to eat meat. 6. I live in the South East of England in Kent. Ramsgate, if we're going to be picky. 7. The area is absolutely appalling for vegetarian and vegan food. I'm only aware of one vegetarian restaurant and it's called 'The Hippo Cafe' and it still caters for meat-eaters, so as your trying to tuck into your animal friendly meal you can still smell another person's bacon sarnie cooking. As for clothing there's absolutely nothing, mainly lack of information but still partially down to ignorance. 8. I don't have a favourite bean. Butter beans are alright but I can't stand lentils, pulses or anything like that. It's probably just down to not being shown how to make them up properly, ignorance basically. 9. My favourite place ever is South East Asia, Thailand and Cambodia. They're absolutely mind blowing places. 10. My favourite type of film is comedy, anything that makes me laugh my a**e off basically. 11. The last meal I ate was Linda McCartney sausages and mash with vegetarian gravy. Yum. 12. I'm definitely a night person, I get really groggy if I have to wake up before midday. 13. I found out about this site through scouring the net for help on veganism. 14. Guest guest
According to the groups and contacts pages in the Vegan magazine there is a Vegan Group based in Ramsgate, so no reason why you should not soon be able to meet up with some like-minded people. You are lucky to have a group near you. The contact person is listed on the Vegan Society website, here, under Kent, someone called Rosalind, http://www.vegansociety.com/html/about_us/local_contacts/england.php Don't worry about not being fully vegan yet, most vegan groups I've come across are very definitely welcoming so long as people eat vegan food only at their events. I'm sure they will be very pleased to hear from someone thinking about being vegan. Realfood also do a vegan buddying scheme to help with the transition to veganism, http://www.realfood.org.uk/ You think your start doing it as a bet was bad, please don't think of it like that! It doesn't matter, you got started on a more compassionate way of life and that is what matters. I was hovering on the brink of veganism for a year or two, really knowing it was the right thing to do but I just lacked the will-power to give up cheese, and only finally made the change when I was going out with someone who was vegan! As well as caring about the animals, I wanted to be good enough for this man, and he seemed to be still hung up on a previous girlfriend who was a meat-eater and that gave me the push I needed, I was a bit in awe of him as he was about three years older than me and more confident and quite a good campaigner on animal rights, and I was desperate to be as good in his opinion as his previous g/f and I mistakenly thought if I was vegan like him and not as I thought he saw it, a mere lame half-hearted veggie, he would really care for me and forget about her, but I also felt it was stupid of me to feel I was not good enough as I had always been quite the little feminist. In fact I don't think he ever saw me as being as good a person as his ex but hey that was his problem not mine and even after we parted ways I stuck with veganism because I wanted to be vegan for the animals, and that was what mattered. When I said to a friend years later that I felt I was pretty weak to have dithered so long and waited to go vegan until I was going out with a vegan (who did not really care for me anyway), one of my very dedicated vegan friends who was brought up vegetarian, confessed that for a brief time she ate meat because of the influence of a meat-eating boyfriend, and she said that was much worse! I guess she was not so dedicated then, as she was raised veggie and not a convert to it, so until she was really consciously connecting eating habits with the suffering of animals it did not really click for her how important it was to stay veggie. I don't see her lapse as much different from me eating meat when I was younger, I just was not very aware and I suppose she was not at the time. She is one of the most dedicated and hard working vegans I know now. I went vegetarian when I was in 6th form at school and being accused of being a hypocrite by my classmates who were doing dissection (I was not doing biology myself so did not get put in the position of standing up and refusing to dissect). I told them how sick it was killing animals just so you can cut them up when you can study books and models instead. I asked them why they didn't refuse to do it because it was cruel, and I said I would have definitely refused to take part, so they told me I was a hypocrite for eating meat if I thought it was wrong to kill animals, so I blurted out this is the last time I eat meat because I cannot argue with that. And I knew I had to stick to it or be a complete fake! Thankfully it was not hard because my mum was supportive, and I was ready to make the commitment to be veggie. So while it was not exactly a bet, I definitely found being challenged by meat-eaters to be consistent gave me the push to do it. I cannot respect someone who is a total hypocrite so I decided they would more likely take notice of what I had to say on cruelty to animals if I lived by what I believed. 14. I just need some advice on veganism really. There's alot I need to know before I dive in and fail miserably at it. S.O.S!!! Guest guest
Hey John! Just wanted to say thenks for your help regarding my S.O.S. in my introduction email. I've just emailed Fran Hutcheson at www.vegan-info.com asking for a mentor so hopefully that'll be quite useful. Guest guest
Hi Lesley! Just thought I'd say thanks for emailing. I had absolutely no idea about the vegan group that's based in Ramsgate, I've just not been made very aware of these things. You can't find any vegan publications in Ramsgate, any advertisements or such like, I just don't have the time to look these things up. Another thing I've been trying to find out that I was wondering if you could maybe help me with; are tattooing inks/pigments vegan friendly and if so, which ones? It sounds easy enough to find out but it's seemingly impossible. I'm an apprentice tattoo artist and am quite heavily tattooed myself and I've tried phoning and emailing suppliers for a list of ingredients but, as is the case with most tattoo suppliers and other artists, they're very tight with their information. The suppliers seem to think a 19 year old apprentice will be able to take a list of ingredients and start making her own batches!!! Alot of pigments are suspended in glycerol/glycerine to thicken the pigment and give it a more paste like texture. I've only found out that a company called Intenze Colours uses this technique, so they're out of the question. Unfortunately, I am going to have to make some sacrifices due to the nature of my work but I have been told that if I can find vegan alternatives to products that may not be suitable e.g. Vaseline/ Petroleum Jelly, Isopropyl Alcohol, Washing Up Liquid, and pay for them myself then that's fine. Now I just have to find them. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Spanna )Lesley Dove <Lesley wrote: According to the groups and contacts pages in the Vegan magazine there is a Vegan Group based in Ramsgate, so no reason why you should not soon be able to meet up with some like-minded people. Guest guest
Hi Spanna, Glad to hear you've got in touch with Fran - I know her from one of the discussion lists, and she's very helpful. Major obstacles to being vegan...Well, for me, I had it real easy. I was already a vegetarian, and having made that transition, cutting out the last few bits of dairy didn't seem that hard. Especially as there are 'fake' milks, cheeses, etc. available. Getting rid of my non-vegan clothing was a bit harder, but on the other hand vegans disagree on whether this is important anyway - it is certainly important not to buy new non-vegan products, but if you already have them, it is often argued that keeping them makes no difference. For me, though, it was kind of symbolic - getting rid of everything non-vegan from my life. I think the biggest obstacle generally encountered is the reactions of other people, friends, family, even people at a restaurant. But, hopefully, if people have accepted you being a vegetarian, they'll respect your decision to become vegan as well. And if all else fails, email lists/vegan groups give you a place to vent your frustrations at a non-vegan world! Other than that, it is sometimes hard when you find you've inadvertantly eaten/used something that isn't vegan. But I find it real helpful to bear in mind that veganism is an ideal, not some state that can ever be achieved: it 'seeks to exclude as far as possible and practical' animal products. So if you accidentally use something non-vegan, or discover a non-vegan ingredient in some essential medicine, that doesn't mean you're being hypocritical, or everything else you do to be a vegan isn't still worth doing! Cheers, John Ps: I vaguely recall a discussion about tattoo ingredients on a list somewhere, and seem to remember someone saying that plenty are vegan. Another place to ask for obscure advice is www.veganvillage.co.uk, and I'd be willing to bet that if you placed a message on their board someone would be able to help. Guest guest
Unfortunately I wouldn't know anything about the veganness of tattoos as the idea of getting one has never appealed to me so I've never looked into it. I did hear once about someone who had the vegan symbol as a tattoo, I thought that was pretty good! I've come across loads of vegans who do like tattoos so I am sure you will be able to get some answers from someone soon. You make a good point about not seeing any information locally about your local vegan group, because I think it is true that a lot of groups don't publicise themselves very well. I have been trying to get things happening with other veggies and vegans in my area but I know I need to do more about publicity. They might only be quite a small group in your area, maybe you could offer to help them with publicising themselves if you feel that they are not getting well-known enough in the area. If you don't get the Vegan magazine you might not know about them, and most vegans are not members of the Vegan Society. Non-vegans can join as associate members too. Or for a less overwhelming overview, try www.vegan-info.com. This also has a lively vegan discussion list you can join, and a mentor scheme where they match you up with someone who will help you with becoming a vegan. Other than that, if you've any questions at all, just ask - either on the list, or feel free to email me directly All the best, John Anna Midgley [pinkspanna6]26 December 2004 22:25 Subject: (unknown) Hey! 14. I just need some advice on veganism really. There's alot I need to know before I dive in and fail miserably at it. S.O.S!!!
