Guest guest
Hi, I am new here. I stopped eating meat on Aug. 6th. It is something I have always wanted to do. It may be a mid-life thing...decided I should just do what I want. So, I am a lactose intolerant vegetarian. My daughter and husband still eat meat but they have to make it themselves. One thing I am concerned about is my 17 yo daughter - she is slightly anemic. She was going to give blood but they wouldn't let her. I took her to the Dr. because she has been tired. They tested her for mono but it showed no current infection. It showed she was anemic. What foods are high in iron? Thanks! Kale, collard greens, spinach (though some say the oxalates in spinach keep your body from using the iron), anything cooked in cast iron cookware. Soybeans, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, lentils, kidney beans, mung beans. All of the above have more iron per gram of food than beef. If you're vegetarian (not vegan) eggs are a good source of iron. They have almost as much iron per gram as beef -- slightly less. To increase iron absorption, eat lots of vitamin C with it. Some say cutting down on black tea also helps. Sparrow
