Guest guest
Hello, my name is Bev and I live in Ohio USA. I am not yet a veggie but my husband has been a diabetic for a few years now and has been put on insulin recently. He is about 25lbs over weight but I hate using any medication so does he, however I would hate to be without him more. We have been looking around for ways to possible get his body to work correctly. We had come accross a facility that gauranteed to get him off his meds but it was a month long stay and we coulnd not afford it, however they did come out with a book called the 30 Day Diabetic Miracle which really talked about the benefits of being a vegetarian. Also the prospects of getting him off any of his medication is very attractive to me. Me myself I have about 40lbs to loose Can' call it baby fat anymore being that my baby turned 13 last week :-) I have three of those teen agers (YIKES) 17, 14, 13 oldest girls youngest is a boy. I am hoping you guys can give me advice on how to do the transformation. What recipes are best for transitioning. I am going to do this full force. But I know if I cannot make it taste good I will lose him. I look forward to meeting all of you. I was very happy to find your group. Guest guest
Hi Bev, Welcome!! It's nice to meet you! As for the diabetes, I would recommend " Dr Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes. If you can't find it at your library, you can order it from Amazon.com Also, any and all books by Dr. John McDougall. " The New Becoming Vegetarian " By Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis is a good all around resource with tons of great advice for new vegetarians. There are many other good books out as well. Check your library and I bet you find tons of wonderful vegetarian books and cookbooks. There are millions of great tasting, healthy vegetarian recipes. What kind of foods do you like to eat? Whatever ethnic cuisine you enjoy, there are vegetarian recipes available. You can find substitutes for most any kind of meat, chicken, etc. such as veggie burgers, veggie " hot dogs " , soy and seitan foods that taste like chicken, fish etc. You can even get veggie pepperoni and 'sausage'! Best of luck to you, and I know the group will help you as much as possible. I'm fairly new here myself, and everyone here is so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Guest guest
Welcome to the group! Sorry to hear your husband has diabetes. There's a lot of that being diagnosed right now - and of course a lot of research being done. I don't have diabetes, but I have read a bit about it and Dr Neal Barnard has a book out on Reversing Diabetes (of some such title). You might want to take a look. He is pretty good on other things. (I don't know the book you mention, but I'll take a look.) Sadly, this isn't a health or medical group (although many members have health issues and many of those are pleased to discuss them with other members, both on and off list). But we do like to think our members can improve their health through a veggie diet *nods wisely* and we do sympathize. Let us know what happens with his weight and meds, okay? And good luck with the rest of the family and vegetarianism. I know it can be very difficult if members have family who object to their lifestyle choice - sometimes even when it is absolutely necessary for life and health! (Sometimes I just don't understand families!) Please write in often. Guest guest
I am fairly new and what I am doing is still eat dairy and e**s. I am almost off them. I thought free range *ggs would be humane, I am weining my family from the dairy by mixing soy with the organic mil*. I am also giving them coco soy milk and they are responding well. The boco and morning star products are good. My son's did not know until I told them that is was not meat. I also went on PETA.org and found out that animals are treated cruely and abused. We are feeding ourselfs antiboitics, cancer, pesticides, arenic and much more. My family was happy to give it up, I know my husband still craves mea*, but If i keep making all these wonderful reciepes he will not miss it. After a few weeks you feel better, poop more and my energy went through the roof. I have been losing weight like crazy. Welcome!!! Even if this group helps your family eat healthier that would be wonderful , " Bev " <cro7690 wrote: > > Hello, my name is Bev and I live in Ohio USA. Guest guest
Thank you for the warm welcome. We are starting tomorrow. I am really trying to find the recipes. There is so much I need to learn and I know this is the right health choice for us but I know I have to find good recipes or they are not going to last with it. So any good recipes let me know. We looked at books but no one we know is a vegetarian so it would just be winging it ya know. **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Hi Bev, How is it going on your first day at trying vegetarianism? Any problems? What kind of recipes are you looking for? Give us an idea of what your family usually enjoys (type of cuisine, etc.) and I'm sure the group can come up with some great recipes for you. Also, take a look at the recipe files from this group. There are tons of recipes! Cathy (-: , cro7690 wrote: > > Thank you for the warm welcome. We are starting tomorrow. I am really > trying to find the recipes. There are tons of recipes! And I would add that all of them have been tried out by genuine human beings! That may sound like a silly thing to say, but I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had a kitchen disaster after cooking something I found on about.com or some other site with recipes. I remember one time I wrote to a woman to tell her a mistake I had found in her recipe and she apologized and said that she actually cooks the food herself but had never measured the quantities of spices so she just guessed at how much she put in! Ouch! All our recipes here are " tried and true " or else clearly state if they aren't. That's part of what makes this group so awesome for recipes!
