Guest guest
I went to a holistic Dr today and he said I need more Iodine and more protein. Without consuming meat, do you have any suggestiong how I would get more of those? I eat nuts and flax oil and grains and ground flax seeds, and salmon. Guest guest
Hi Therese, I am no expert on the subject, but vegetables such as green and red cabbage contain a good source of iodine. Similarly, you can increase the protein quotient in your diet by consuming more legumes and pulses. Lentils are an excellent source of protein. I have been a vegetarian since birth and very often doctors are satisfied when I state that I eat atleast a cup of lentils a day. Nuts such as peanuts, cashewnuts are also a good source of protein. Warm regards, Seetha " R. S. " <raw_springfield wrote: I went to a holistic Dr today and he said I need more Iodine and more protein. Lovely too For protein, it's practically everywhere in vegetarian food, but try high-protein foods such as beans and lentils with your grains. Also, quinoa is high in protein. (This is an ancient grain - absolutely delish - which cooks as quickly as the not-so-spectacularly healthy white rice and substitutes nicely for rice, couscous, etc.) As members have already pointed out, animal flesh (including that of f*sh) isn't always anyone's best option. (An understatement, gang, an understatement A little gentle irony there!) You certainly don't need it for protein or omega-3, if that's your reason. Guest guest
Actually nori, wakame and kombu are really good sources of protein too Just read the label on a pack of wakame. There's about 30g of protein per serving. Cheers! You can also make fun nori confetti by getting a hole punch (or for fun, get one of those shaped hole punches that make little pieces shaped like hearts or stars or teddy bears or whatever) and punch a bunch of holes in a sheet of nori to make confetti and sprinkle it over salads, rice, etc. where it can add nutrition and make the food look prettier at the same time. Of course, you wouldn't want to eat them exclusively of other things LOL But oh my how they do perk up a salad, a soup, a stew!!!! Guest guest
I'm more confused than ever. I appreciate ll of your suggetions but I read that not enough iodine is a problem and too much is a problem. I'm considering forsaking western medicine for a holistic approach. Thanks again. , Pat <drpatsant wrote: > > > Actually nori, wakame and kombu are really good > > sources of protein too Just read the label > > on a pack of wakame. Guest guest
Iodine deficiency impacts the thyroid gland. Without enough iodine, one can become hypo-thyroid. With too much iodine, one can poison other organs, such as the liver and kidneys. There are other causes of hypo-thyroidism. If you suspect you are hypo-thyroid, you should have it confirmed and treated by your choice of medical practitioner (I gave up on western medicine for my treatment - meds for life, I think NOT!) Some people who are borderline hypo-thyroid can require more iodine from natural sources to put their T-levels in the normal range. Once that has been accomplished, they do not require medications like synthroid (a synthetic hormone meant to replace the hormones normally produced by the thyroid gland). This would be a good thing! I was hypo-thyroid and it was awful: depression, hair-loss, extremely dry skin, lethargy, easy weight-gain... people tell you it's a phase, but it's not. I am not a doctor. I am just a patient relaying my experience with iodine deficiency. I saw an accupuncturist for my treatment and changed my diet to eliminate table salt and use sea salt and sea vegetables. Sometimes that's all it takes. cheers! Denise ----- From : R. S.[raw_springfield] Sent : 1/24/2008 11:04:40 AM To : Cc : Subject : RE: Re: Iodine Deficiency? I'm more confused than ever. True - but knowing that one can use a little common sense and hit at somewhere in between, yes? Many things are like that - and one just has to be moderate about them. However, and this is a big 'however', this group is not a health or medical group. > I'm considering forsaking western medicine for > a holistic approach. I won't comment on this - because, as I say, this is neither a health nor a medical group. You will do what's best for you, I'm sure. Enjoy the group, and join in when you find something that interests you. We discuss a variety of things (such as your own query to us), but mainly it's pretty low key. We do, however, love to talk about food!!!! And about vegetarianism!!!! THAT can get pretty animated LOL Love and hugs, Pat > > > Actually nori, wakame and kombu are really > good > > > sources of protein too Just read the > label > > > on a pack of wakame.
