Guest guest
Hello, My name is Mark Abramson and I live in Lexington, Massachusetts. Our family became almost exclusively veggie about 1 year and a half ago although we had been heading in that direction for some time. My wife and daughter (14 years old) are enthusiastic veggies. My son (16 years old) less so. Occasionally a me*t dish is provided for him, and he eats non-veggie away from home. We have 2 cats, siblings, Leo & Izzy, that are adorable, but strangely indifferent to our veggie politics. We love to collect (and use!) veggie cookbooks. Our current favorites are Madhur Jaffrey's " World Vegetarian " and Monisha Bharadwaj's " India's Vegetarian Cooking. " We just got Mark Bittman's " How to cook everything Vegetarian " and are just feeling out the recipes. I travel occasionally for work and am always interested in tips on restaurants that have inspired veggie choices (don't need to be all veggie restaurants as might panic my coworkers...). I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you. - Mark
Guest guest
Should you ever make it to Memphis, Tennessee, check out Automatic Slim's Tonga Club. They have a veggie plate special that is out of this world, among other things, and this fruit soup - I know that's not the real name - that is fabulous. Hi, Mark! To eat veggie at non-veggie restaurants, your best bet of all is to look for ethnic restaurants. At Italian restaurants, you can order pasta with marinara sauce. At Mexican restaurants, look for sides of beans and rice, tortillas, and spoon some of the salsa (brought to the table with the unhealthy fried chip appetizers) on it and it's vegan and cheaper than an entree. If you eat cheese, look for the bean and cheese burrito platter. At Chinese restaurants, you can get stir-fried veggies and rice. At Japanese restaurants you can get veggie sushi like cucumber rolls or carrot and spinach rolls. Indian restaurants usually have at least one veggie dish. Western restaurants can usually put something together for you. Some have garden burgers, but even if they don't have a veggie selection, you can usually get the chef or cook to make a veggie plate for you, a big salad with select ingredients left off if necessary, a fruit plate, etc. Most steak houses have salad bars and some of them are really awesome. I love the salad bar at Sizzler, for example. Also, the giant buffet restaurants such as Golden Corral tend to have a lot of really good veggie options. Even fast-food can be worked with if you're creative. McDonald's has a fruit and walnut salad that's not the healthiest food in the world, but vegetarian (vegan if you don't eat the yogurt.) At Taco Bell you can get bean burritos (hold the cheese if you're vegan) and you can get a side of rice to add to it or you can get a 7-layer which is veggie or vegan if you have them hold the cheese and sour cream. Pizza Hut has a salad bar that's not the greatest, but I've seen worse. Subway has a black bean sub (at least they used to. I haven't been in ages.) that you can order without cheese to make it vegan. Wendy's has a side salad or a caesar salad if you eat cheese. They also have baked potatoes with broccoli and cheese. Burger King has a veggie burger that is not vegan (even if you hold the cheese) but is veggie (but you will have to ask specifically for them to microwave it because otherwise they will put it right on their grill with the me*t juices.) Finally, if you're travelling and need to get a meal on your own, many grocery stores have really great salad bars these days with lots of beans as well as fruits and veggies on them. The salad is usually sold by weight so you can feel more free to get as much or as little as you want. I hope some of these ideas are helpful to you! Welcome to the list. It's great to have you here!
