Have you tried Follow Your Heart's mozzarella? http://www.imearthkind.com/ -- It's the first commercial vegan cheese I've ever been able to stand (but I'll admit I didn't love it). My meat-eating boyfriend liked it, though, so I think it's a keeper if you really crave cheese. serene
Guest guest
Scott's fine for the name. I couldn't find anything simple that would take for an ID. :-) Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard of this, but can't find it anywhere yet. I requested Whole Foods to carry it twice already. I'm in DC. I'm hoping that eventually the cheese cravings will disappear. :-) Scott , serene <serene@s...> wrote: > > zeitgeber (is that what we should call you?) wrote: > > >I'm also in search of the " perfect " or close-to-perfect > >vegan mozzarella substitute that doesn't have casein (any > >suggestions? - the ones I've tried taste more like a pizza box than > >the pizza itself). Guest guest
My name is Sandy. I live near Springfield, Missouri, in the beautiful Ozark Mountains, with four dogs and two cats. I am a 60-yr. retired widow, mother of five children ranging from my oldest, a son who is 43, to the youngest of my four daughters, who is 20. I joined vegerarianspice because I am trying to completely change my eating habits, and more importantly, the way I look at food. I am disabled with Fibromyalgia (a chronic condition that causes wide-spread pain in the muscles, joints and tendons). I am also Diabetic, and have arthritis. In addition, I am seriously overweight, which obviously puts added strain on all the places that hurt! I have lost 35 lbs. since November, by reducing my consumption of meat products, and eating more fruits and vegetables, and switching to whole grains. I feel much better, and that has given me the incentive to go further. My daughter, Meg, eats vegetarian and she has been encouraging me to do the same. I have also greatly reduced the amount of caffiene I consume, and eliminated artificial sweeteners. But I need help! I love spicy foods, and the things I've been eating are so BLAND! I enjoy cooking, but since starting this " healthy " plan, I just steam some veggies, cook some rice, slice some fruit and call it dinner! There's got to be a better way...and I'm hoping ya'll will help me find it. This is a BIG swich for a Southerner raised on fried chicken and pork chops, but I'm giving it my all. I hope I haven't talked your ears off! I look forward to meeting all of you. Sandy

I look forward to meeting all of you. Sandy Hi, Sandy! Don't worry, you didn't talk my ears off! I'm a big talker, too, and a big listener and I'm so happy to meet you! Wow, 35 pounds since November! Great job! That is one of the great things about going veggie: you can eat more food while getting fewer calories and more nutrition. Really great for getting your body where it ought to be without having to starve. I was diagnosed with diabetes in December and I've been working on getting my diet more in line with the diets researchers have found to improve and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. The three points for improving diabetes are: vegan (which means not only vegetarian but also no dairy or eggs), low fat (this is the one I struggle with, but I'm making great improvements), and low glycemic index (if you don't know what that means, check out http://www.glycemicindex.com). This diet has been studied extensively and found to be twice as effective as the standard ADA diabetes diet! Since this is a recipe list and I'm going off-focus, I'll stop there, but if you want to talk veggie diabetes, don't hesitate to drop me a mail off-list and I can point you to some of the resources I'm currently using. Let me tell you, if you're tired of bland vegetarian food, you've come to the right place! This group of people kicks out some wonderful, zesty recipes and if that's not a good enough reason to stick around, they're also some of the nicest people on the face of the planet! I'm glad you joined us and I look forward to hearing more from you. Sparrow
Guest guest
Hi Sandy - I see that Sparrow, one of our moderators, has already given you a very warm welcome and some excellent tips (thanks, Sparrow!) to help you get started. I hope you enjoy our group - we're a mixed bunch, veggies and vegans, almost-veggies and omnivores, and here for a whole bunch of reasons too. What we do have in common, however, is that (contrary to popular belief about vegetarians) we LOVE FOOD - we just love the right kind of food! You should find plenty of recipes in our Files - with lots of good spicy flavour when that's what you want (and spicy HEAT too - because that's a primary focus of this group) - although seasonings and 'heat' can always be toned down a little to suit the individual, right? For the most part, they're divided, within the folders, between spicy and not-so-spicy, and the folders themselves are arranged according to type of food or meal (appetizers, salads, desserts, soups, sauces, etc.) or, in the case of main meals and side dishes, according to the origin of the food (asia, europe, etc.) We don't have any recipes marked for diabetics, but please feel free to ask if you want any help in finding a good recipe or in adapting any recipe you see to diabetic needs. It may not always be easy or even possible, but there will be someone here who can help, I'm sure They're a helpful group and I myself would be lost without them! (No, I'm not diabetic, but they've taught me such a lot about food!) And now, Have FUN with this group And post often. We love to chat!!!!!
