What is Casein?

I went to the co-op today for new interesting goodies. I found a

" cheese alternative " (Rice Shreds), that claimed it was lactose free.

I brought it home only to find out that it contains casein (milk

protein). Is this a dairy product? If this is a silly question, bear

with me. I am still a vegan newbie and still learning.

Sorry hon, but yes it is a dairy product - which

is no problem for lacto-vegetarians but is a

problem for vegans. I find you have to read the

ingredients list on the side of every package -

and ignore what they tell you up front, you know?

They love to say lactose free or even dairy free

when they only mean they haven't put a bunch of

milk in there (but they HAVE - just not by their

llights). These things are very frustrating, I

know. I had lovely vegan cheez for a while from

my local cheese stall at the market, but later

they started using the kind with casein I

console myself with knowing that even vegan cheez

(the brand was Tofutti btw) has more fat in in

than is good for my particular bod. *shrug*

 

Go on, ask any question you like. Nothing is

naive or silly when you're just learning or have

forgotten - if you don't ask, how're you going to

do better at being veg*n? That's part of what

this group is for: to help
