Hi Baba,

What does being " Brahmanic Vegetarian " mean? I tried to google this

but couldn't get a definitive answer.

My boyfriend and I almost got into a fight, on the phone, last night. He

demanded to have real cheese in the house for his mashed potatoes. He was

picking up some organic ketchup (my addiction) at the store and wanted to get

some. Said he was getting some.

He ate his mashed taters without cheese last night, though there are still

Kraft singles in the fridge now.

Not only does Kraft suck fruitcake b/c it's dairy, but they do test some

things on animals...uugghh..

I made a rule for there to be no meat in my fridge EVER AGAIN. I had to bend

on the dairy... compromise.

He has told me, though, that when it comes down to it, even though he

complains and gets mad, part of what he loves about me is that I am trying to

get him to eat better.

Last night I made a vegan " meatloaf " , and he loved it more than I did. If he

is loving the vegan stuff, trust me: there is hope for everyone else!

I have meat in my house I just do not eat it. My husband buys from the Kosher

market. I do not mind having it in my home. Not eating meat was a personal

choice . My husband imbraces my vegen dishes . He eats meat when he is alone due

to our schedule. Most of the time when he eats .. he thinks he is eating meat,

but I trade out the meat for faux meat so we can enjoy a meal together. I do use

dairy and free range eggs from a lady I know not to far from our home. We have a

co-op here and we can enjoy these products knowing they are cruelty free. I

guess it would depend if you think a egg is a chicken, so no offensine to

anyone.

Take care :)

I think it's great, Robin, that you're vegetarian

(you say you also make vegan dishes - wonderful!

) because every time you don't eat meat you are

saving lives. Good for you! As for your husband,

well, he's a grown man and he has to make his own

decisions.

About the free-range eggs: No prob on this

ovo-lacto group using eggs and dairy :) But since

you mention them being cruelty-free there's just

another point that could be made: once the hens

have finished the best of their laying years,

what happens to them then? Are the kept around,

fed, and let roam around on grass etc. until they

die of old age? Or are they sold off for

someone's dinner table or pet food??? SORRY - not

asking you to answer this question, honest I'm

not. But that's one of the things that worries

some people about even free-range eggs from

responsible, organic, kindly farmers. You know?

(Thought I'd mention it before someone else did

*sigh* Hugs, hon!!!!)

I think you've got a good and sensible approach

in your household - and it's great that the two

of you can come to this compromise without any

ill feelings. It's so hard, I'm sure. (It's easy

for me to offer so-called advice and comments,

you know, because both my dh and I went first

vegetarian then vegan together. It would be

soooooo difficult if we didn't have the same

eating habits I think. I truly admire the

dedication you and so many other people here have

to the vegetarian lifestyle.)

In admiration -

and with love and hugs - Pat

Hi Sophie - welcome to our group!

I'm in London, ON, so we're kinda neighbours on

this planet :)

Hey, we have lots of good recipes here - all

kinds, as you'll see if you have a look - so you

should be able to find something to tempt your

husband to more vegetables. And who knows, you

both may find you prefer them to the alternative

:)

Good luck - and let us know if we can help in any

way, okay? Post to let us know how you're getting

on!

Ouch, Kris - I'm so glad the fight was avoided -

how awful to have it over something as important

as diet but something that can be settled with,

as you say, a compromise that hurts neither of

you. Good for you!

Yeah, I know what you mean about Kraft :( I have

so many things against major companies like that,

but let's not go there right now or I'll be

typing this all night (and think how that'd fill

up your mailboxes! LOL)

The compromise on the dairy vs the me*t was a

sensible one, I think. We might understand the

cruelty involved in dairy farming (and even those

who are lacto must know there are problems there

*nods sagely*), but it's hard to get through to

an omnivore and maybe one shouldn't try until

they have that first 'click' and understand the

problems of animal flesh. Afterwards, well, baby

steps, eh? :)

And as I keep saying, think of all the lives you

are saving. Huge hugs for that - it makes this

woman happy to hear it!

You say -

> Last night I made a vegan " meatloaf " , and he

> loved it more than I did. If he is loving the

> vegan stuff, trust me: there is hope for

> everyone else!

That's funny! I'm sure you're a good cook and it

sounds wonderful! Do you have a recipe to

share???? In any case, I do know what you mean -

he is a guy who has to have his me*t and two veg,

right? And if he'll enjoy vegan - like WOW - what

a number you've done on him through your cuisine.

Congratulations!

Love and hugs - to both of you -

Pat

Well I am sure they are sold for food, but I can feel better about buying

directly from a farm that I can visit and see the conditions the chickens are

kept. I have a problem with animals who are abused and are kept in horrible

conditions. I personally had a grandmother who had a farm in West Virginia and

she loved her animals. In the olden days real farmers loved there animals and

spent long hours tending to them and would of never beat them or cause them to

suffer. Of course they ate them, but things were different at least on my

grandmas personal farm. She never had animals trucked to slaughter houses. I

spent every summer there and would hand milk her cows and gather the eggs. The

chickens were free roamed, organic, No hormones , steroids, prods. We would call

the cows for milking and they would come, my grandma was known to kiss a cow ot

two. I understand your position and respect it :) Things are not the same as

grandma's farm. Animals are just a object of food, and

fast money.

I understand the world will always consume animal products. I just hope that

the testimony of people who love animals will fill people up to demand better

conditions for animals hearded for food. The problem I see is that most people

do not know what happens to the food they eat. So consumers keep on buying and

the goverment keeps collecting. There has to be a way for the world to stand up

to the farmers and goverment and say they do not want animals to live there

life being kept in horrible conditions and abused. The world will never be

vegen, so its time we as people come up with a more do able plan to help these

animals. Yes!!!! I agree and I am proud to say I save 300-400 animals a year by

being vegetarian.

Hi,

I'm in Toronto too so I guess we really are neighbours. My husband definitely

not a vegetarian although he will eat what I make. My two kids are vegetarian

(and I have the full support of my husband).

Welcome to the group. You'll find lots of great recipes and advice here!

Hi Robin - sorry I'm late getting back to you but

it's been a rough few days.

> I personally had a grandmother who

> had a farm in West Virginia . . .

Oh I do understand. I have happy memories of

farms when I was young too. Things are different

now, however - but if you've found one that

recreates that memory for you then you're lucky.

> I understand the world will always consume

I agree wholeheartedly. I just wish that more

people would see that there's no necessity for

people in the 21st century to be eating animals -

we know better and there are so many other

choices. Of course, there always were, except in

extreme climates, but . . . .

> The world will never be vegen, so its

> time we as people come up with a more do able

> plan to help these animals. Yes!!!! I agree and

Well good for you, Robin - keep that thought.

Because so many people just don't care a damn :(

Thanks for writing back. Hugs!!!!!!

Love, Pat
