I live with a meat eater husband and 3 dogs, 3 cats and my elderly father, who is also a meat eater. I have a 2-1/2 year old granddaughter who seems to naturally almost be vegetarian. Guest guest
Being vegan wasn't so difficult for me since I realized that I was lactose intolerant. About a year ago I ate a single serving sized cup of yogurt for breakfast for a week straight, and stayed bloated and gassy and worse. I had already switched to soy milk, so that was easy. I was never really big on cheese, but they seem to throw it into a lot of things. Now that we have an Earth Fare nearby, I have been able to try some yummy faux cheeses that contain no milk dirivitives (sp) and love them. My main thing is reading ingredients, if I don't know what it is I don't eat it (along with not eating meat, eggs, milk, or honey stuffs). It's easier than one might think, if only the bulk of society would realize it! lol Stopping smoking is my next goal. My grandmother had a heart attack at 48, and my mother a stroke in her early 50s. They both have had a series of other health problems. I figured if I start now (I'm only 28) I can stop what I can from happening. I know it isn't all avoidable, but I sure can try. Guest guest
Welcome, Kathy! Isn't it interesting that one becomes vegetarian for one reason and then over time one starts to find other equally valid reasons, all reinforcing the original decision Good for you! As for becoming vegan, that works just fine if you're serious about it - it makes such good sense from the point of view of concern for animals - and of course from a health standpoint too. Good luck with that - let us know if we can give advice in any way. Lots of our recipes are vegan, since many of our members are (myself included). I'm in Canada with my dh, also vegan btw. Easier that way, I think, so I admire your persistence. Nice to meet another dog and cat person too.
