Guest guest
Hi everyone, My name is Amber Mahan. I live in Ohio, USA. I've been wanting to become a vegetarian for a long time. I have tried it a few times before, but always went back to eating meat, because when you have eaten it your entire life, it is hard to stop. Like today, my family and I went to McDonalds after a day of shopping, and I ate chicken. I was going to get a salad, but the chicken smelled so good, that I just had to get it. At least it wasn't red meat, right? Right now, I am a junior high school student. I get really good grades, 4.0 gpa. I am also involved in a lot of afterschool activities, 4-H, Mock Trial, Stand, Carteens, NHS, etc. Right now, I am getting ready for prom. Today, I finally found the perfect prom dress after 3 weeks of searching. I love to read and I watch a lot of old television, MASH, Bonanza, Little House on the Prarie, all Law & Orders. I also love hanging out with my friends. I have one dog, Tony, and one cat, Max. I live with my grandparents, and a younger brother and sister. I guess right now, I want to learn how to eat no meat while living in a house full of people who love red meat and fried chicken. My family really isn't supporting me in my decision because they think I will give up on it like in the past. I could go back to meat, but I feel so guilty after eating meat. Sometimes when I do, I start to think about the animal it came from, and I can't eat it any more. So any suggestions will be great. I'm really happy to be here, and I think this will be great for me. Thanks, Amber
Guest guest
Welcome, Amber! I have been a vegetarian off-and-on since I was 13, and perhaps I can give you some tips when your family is less than supportive (my mom didn't care, but my dad was offended that I wouldn't eat meat...go figure). Have you tried taking over the kitchen for a night and cooking a vegetarian meal for your family? I found that my family was glad to let me fix dinner, and they were willing to at least try a veggie meal. You could do something simple yet still familiar, like spaghetti with marinara or lasagna with tofu instead of or in addition to cheese. Serve it with a great salad, and you've got dinner! Another thing I always did was just cook a separate protein dish for myself and eat the veggies/starch/salad my family would have. Veggie burgers are great and heat up in the microwave quickly, and beans are cheap and easy, too. Hope some of this helps! I'm sure others will give you tips as well. And remember, this is YOUR journey...do it as YOU can do it. If you have eat chicken once a year...well, that's still better than daily, right? Baby steps! :-) AKM horses1029 <horses1029 wrote: Hi everyone, My name is Amber Mahan. I live in Ohio, USA. I've been wanting to become a vegetarian for a long time.
