Guest guest
You may have seen or heard this recent news item about Italian mozzarella: http://news./s/ap/20080327/ap_on_re_eu/eu_italy_mozzarella Additionally, however, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that many cheeses - especially those made in the traditional way (which means very very good-tasting cheeses) - are not actually vegetarian. Most of you know this, but just in case I have found a link to a story from the BBC - dated today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/vegetarian_and_vegan/entertaining.shtml Even in North American and Australia, etc., members who eat cheese would be wise to inquire about how it is made. The offending ingredient, rennet, is NOT listed on the package. (Oh dear, that lovely Parmesan, etc.!) For processed cheeses and other dairy products, the addition of animal gelatin SHOULD be listed - but if as 'gelatin' without a modifier to indicate it is vegetarian, then it will be more likely than not of animal origin. Guest guest
All the more reason for everyone just to go vegan! Lol. Actually, I had gotten some really yummy rice shredded " mozeralla " just to read the packeage (after eating it, duh) to find it had some milk stuffs in it. The label didn't say it was vegan, but it did say rice, but I still should have known better. So, there are alternatives that are yummy (and healthier). ~Kris Pat <drpatsant wrote: You may have seen or heard this recent news item about Italian mozzarella: http://news./s/ap/20080327/ap_on_re_eu/eu_italy_mozzarella Additionally, however, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that many cheeses - especially those made in the traditional way (which means very very good-tasting cheeses) - are not actually vegetarian. Guest guest
Yeah, Kris, that's happened to me before now too Then our local cheese shop started stocking some lovely soy 'parmezan' cheez - and some marked as being vegan without casein. Wow. But that didn't last long for reasons unknown to me. They just started getting in the one _with_ casein. And then after a while stopped that too, last time I bothered to look. All the rice cheez they carried had casein in it. The only shreds I could find - 'mozerella' or american cheez or whatever it was - also had milk products. So I gave up on cheez except for Toffutti brand (the only vegan one I can readily get) which IS vegan - although all they have here are the slices. Now I don't bother at all, but in a way that's too bad. Today, for example, I have a lasagna in the oven for a late lunch (It'll be out at 1.30) and I faked up the cheezy component - which is quite easy to do. Anyone interested in that can check our Faux Foods file - or do we call it Fakes???? Anyway, it's in the recipes section of the Files!
