Guest guest
Category: Sandwiches Cuisine: Mexican Prep Time: 30 minutes or less Special Considerations: Vegan Servings: 6 Spicy Sloppy Joes Ingredients: 3 tbs. canola oil 4 large cloves of garlic, minced 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 1 ½ lb soy crumbles 3 tbs. chili powder 1 – 2 jalapeño peppers, seeded and diced 1 bottle of pale ale or brown ale* ¾ c. low sodium soy sauce 1 c. finely chopped green onions Shredded lettuce 1 small avocado, thinly sliced 6 Wheat Beer or Potato Rolls Directions: 1. Warm oil in large heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add garlic and green peppers and sauté, stirring frequently, 5 minutes. 2. Stir in soy crumbles and chili powder. Cook 1 – 2 minutes, until fragrant. 3. Add jalapeños, ale, chili sauce and soy sauce, mix well. Reduce heat to medium-low, simmer, stirring often, about 15 minutes, until thickened. 4. Mix in green onions. 5. Mound Sloppy Joe filling on rolls and top with shredded lettuce and 2 – 3 slices of avocado. NOTE: I served this meal to non-vegetarians who did not even realize until after I told them that it was not meat and they loved it! The menu was as follows: Spicy Sloppy Joes Broccoli Slaw Pickles Potato Chips (homemade) Iced Green Tea, Water & Beer This recipe is also a great base for making tacos, burritos or enchiladas. I hope you enjoy it as much as I and my friends did! The recipe easily doubles. It is very spicy so if you like less spice in your life cut back on the chili sauce and only use one jalapeño. Enjoy! *For a list of vegan friendly brewers: http://tastebetter.com/features/booze/type=beer
