Hi everyone. I live in Canada.

I've thought vegetarianism the best way to eat for,

oh, 30 years. I've

never managed to make the switch completely, as I do

sometimes have

the desire to eat certain meats. But I am always

trying to add to my

recipe arsenal of delicious main-course vegetarian

meals that are

practical and not too labour-intensive.

Kids? Dogs? Cats?

Hobbies? Favourite hates?

Two kids -- boys age 19 (has cerebral palsy and is

developmentally

delayed but is happy and independent; best thing that

ever happened to

me) and 15 (homeschooling by correspondence this year

because he has

never liked public school). I live on a farm (hubby is

an organic

farmer of beef and grain; I keep my nose out of that;

but he loves his

meat and potatoes; there's a story in that, as I get

migraines and he

thinks it's because I don't eat enough meat!), work

from my home

office half-time as an editor for an internet

publication, read tarot,

am interested in herbs for health, walk or bike every

day when the

weather is fine, love my flowers, wildlife and birds

(live in heaven,

here), read quite a bit, like to sing and listen to

music, oh that's

enough about me for now. Hello all!

Welcome, Kate :) Hey if you've been thinking about going veggie for 30 years,

maybe this time you'll actually do it! That'd be great :)

Sorry to hear you won't have support from your husband in this adventure, but

it's not really so difficult to do it alone providing you feed the omnivore a

slab or what he wants in the animal flesh line along with the wonderful things

you make for yourself that you can share! There are lots of people here who have

'mixed' households, and for the main it works out okay :) (Can't speak myself -

both my dh and I went vegetetarian and then vegan together, so no problem.)

How nice that you live a rural existence - some members here would seriously

envy your potential for a lovely vegetable and herb garden!!!!!

Write in and let us know if there is anything we can help you with - we love to

help - and have a look at our Files (access from the Homepage) for fantastic

recipes!

Best, Pat (Group Owner)

<Rant><in a friendly tone, don't get me wrong>

I can happily say that I don't consider it my duty to cook what he

wants to eat. He has to take what he gets, or he can do his own

cooking. What am I, a domestic servant? Not in this lifetime!

That said, out of kindness (since I work from my home office and am

here to do it) I will put a roast or chicken in the oven *if he gets

it out of the deep freeze to thaw* but otherwise I only cook meat when

I crave it myself or am feeling too lazy to do the cutting and

chopping that seems to always be required when cooking vegetarian.

It's so much easier to throw a hunk of dead animal in the oven (sorry,

hope no one's feeling nauseated yet) and boil some potatoes, and

sometimes I succumb to my laziness. My rare inclusion of meat in meals

I make has caused some problems because my spouse is a bit resentful,

but ... tough noogies. He can cook as well as I can and it's up to

him, just as it is to me, to make the time to cook if he wants

something different than I do. I don't feel I owe him my services in

the kitchen; or anywhere, for that matter.

<End of Rant>

Then they'd be *really* envious. I have acres to plant, if I want to.

It only I was more ambitious ....

I'll be checking the recipes and trying some out for my own recipe

collection — the reason I joined this list.

It's great to see photos of the recipes. That helps!

Rant away - we don't mind - as long as it is friendly *lol*

I'm with you all the way as far as that goes :) But of course, I have it easy.

My dh often leads us in different veg directions, just as I often lead him. We

are pretty compatible in our food preferences.

Gotcha :)

It's not that troublesome. I mean, think of all that's required to make dead

animal muscle taste even vaguely palatable :( Veggies otoh always taste good.

Yesssss!

Yes, I can hear the '' clicks even as I read this :( Big rule here

(but how could you know so soon unless you'd read all your files received upon

joining and read the homepage - take a peek, okay?): we don't discuss eating

animal carcases because this offends almost all vegetarians for one reason or

another.

>and boil some

> potatoes, and

Well, you're being unnecessarily hard on yourself, aren't you? I mean, you call

it laziness, but I'd call it habit - a habit of convenience (you know how to do

the omnivore diet with your eyes closed) and a habit of mind (you think 'dinner'

and go onto old practices). There are lots of people here who have been through

this quite recently (and perhaps are still struggling with it), but who have

ways around their tendencies to slip back into me*t-eating days/daze, which they

know is neither good for them or anything else. Just ask and we will help as

much as we can!!!!

Well, sometimes consistency works better than not, but otoh sometimes

(especially in a domestic situation) it helps if you can find those me*t

components of a meal for him that are easy to prepare quickly in a skillet while

you are doing the rest of the meal. It's a delicate negotiation, I would think,

but not impossible, as many here will attest.

Then enjoy!!!!!! We have lots of beautiful recipes, from ovo-lacto to vegan,

cooked to raw, which should please anyone and everyone (even some omnivores like

your dh!).

> It's great to see photos of the recipes. That helps!

Glad you checked them out! Some recipes are here, some not - so if you're

interested you can check both. (The blog started out as an illustration of

recipes sent to this group and to <a

href= " vegetarianslimming/ " >Vegetarian

Slimming</a>, our sister group, but turned into quite something else along the

line.) The blog is representative of my own recipes, originating with me, or

adaptations of others'.

Would love to chat with you more, so please write in again, okay?
