Guest guest
Hi - My name is Deena and I live in Wisconsin. I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years. I am lacto ovo but working on going vegan. I am married with two kids, both of whom are veggies! In my spare time I garden organically, cook, read, listen to folk music and knit. I am looking forward to learning much from all of you in this group.
Guest guest
Welcome, Deena, and congratulations to you for being veggie for so long and for raising two veggie kids Just THINK of all the lives saved there!!! You say you are: > I am lacto ovo > but working on going vegan. Okay, this is a vegetarian group so lots of ovo-lactos here Also, it has to be said, a few of us are already vegan (myself included) so you will likely find lots of vegan recipes in our files! Let us know if you need help/advice/ideas/chat - there's almost always someone around to answer! And - oh - post often!!!! We need help - always - from long-term veggies. Fwiw, I've been veggie for something like 28 yrs now (with some time off for bad behaviour) and turned vegan with the century, although didn't call myself that for ages. My dh and I are both vegan, and right now are eating more raw food than ever before. Dunno how long that will last, but hey, it all is an adventure, right???? We live in Canada with our two beagles and their cat. Guest guest
Hi everyone I have been getting the digest for a while now and love reading the recipes but I have never posted. I live in Israel and it is hard to get some of the ingredients posted by the members here. I eat do eat fish and eggs but don't eat any poultry, meat or dairy.. I suppose that does qualify me as a sort of vegetarian. I must share something that I found funny. We were invited to my husband's aunt for dinner for our Passover holiday. I ate before I went and told her I was bringing a salad and a veggie plate and she mustn't get mad if I don't eat much as I never eat late at night anyway. (After the blessings etc at the table one only starts the meal after 10 pm and I can't do that .. heavy food doesn't digest that way). She knows I haven't eaten meat for 11 years but she thinks I don't eat it because I haven't tasted good stuff yet and she spent the whole night trying to get me to taste her food just to see if it would change my mind. Needless to say I wont be going back there in a hurry. I wanted to say " what part of my sentence don't you understand? I just don't eat that " but I was very polite and told her I wasn't up to it. I have a great recipe to share for Lentil babotie but it has eggs in .. should I post it ? Regards Joan
Guest guest
Well welcome Joan - nice to hear from you You say: > I eat do eat fish and eggs but don't eat any poultry, > meat or dairy.. I > suppose that does qualify me as a sort of vegetarian. Well, not really But that's okay - we have lots of non-vegetarians here on the group and all are welcome. If you eat no animal flesh/'meat' except fish, then that makes you a pescatarian if you want a label for yourself. (I know you eat other things than fish, and avoid some things, but the word is generally used to describe someone who would otherwise be vegetarian except for the fish.) Btw, when we use the word 'meat' here we really do mean all animal flesh - and that includes 'animals' of the earth, of the air AND of the water, with or without fur. It can be confusing, I know, since 'meat' to most people means beef, which makes things tricky for us all when we dine out, doesn't it? Your story about your husband's aunt made me laugh! I think sometimes, although not at the table and certainly not on the occasion of a holiday or celebratory dinner, it is better to just tell people privately _why_ you don't eat meat. A polite 'It doesn't agree with me' (well, it doesn't agree with the way I think, so that'd be no lie) sometimes settles things, but it's difficult I know. > I have a great recipe to share for Lentil babotie but it > has eggs in .. No problem with eggs on an ovo-lacto vegetarian group - just no references to meat or to meat products. > should I post it ? Oh please do! We love getting recipes! And keep posting, okay? It's so nice that you wrote in! Love and hugs, Pat
Guest guest
As a rule, I find meat-eating and meat-eaters rather boring. There is such a huge variety of vegetables, fruit, greens and grains, and ways of preparing them. But most meat-eaters, especially in America, see the " meal " as a large piece of red meat, with vegetables relegated to being " sides " . I " cut my teeth " in vegetarianism at the old " Cranks " vegetarian restaurant chain in the U.K. Anyone else acquainted with it? When I moved to the New York area a lapsed Hindu friend who had married into a Jewish family in New York told me of the concept of " Jewish vegetarian " -- chicken but no red meat! That's at least one step beyond (or backward from) " pescatarian-vegetarian " !! I've found some restaurant staff shocked when told that vegetarians do not, by definition eat fish -- " seafood " (an awful expression) is often offered to people who ask for the vegetarian menu. But one has to accept living in the real world, and I don't bother getting upset or offended over it. (Even though " tofu-eater " is used as a taunt by some right-wingers in the U.S.).
