Guest guest
I noticed I have been losing more hair lately also. I am 51 and been trying vegetarian idea. But I am also menapausal and wondering if it has to do with that. The article I think Pat linked was useful. -- Susan, Tabitha & Pumpkin Pie, Six & Drifter, Jordan, Iceberg, Peanut, Samantha, Baily & Nokki -------------- Original message -------------- Jan <starfishgirl529 Good morning. I wonder if anyone here has run into this problem, and what they did to resolve it. First, I've been a vegetarian (not vegan) for many years, but just started running into this the last few. I dont know if it might have something to do with my age. I'm 48. Anyway, I find that I'm losing a lot of hair. Any ideas? Thoughts? Its been ongoing for awhile. Not bad at times, worse at others. Guest guest
I know, it's always so easy when one is having something a little different happen to the body to remember (or listen to), however unwillingly, the dire warnings we are/were all given about the dangers of being veggie or vegan. Of course, the first thing one thinks is: It must be my diet! And of course it may be that you're not getting enough B12 or zinc or whatever But think about it: lots of people have this problem (hair loss, in this case) and they don't have your 'excuse' because they are muching on animal muscle as fast as their tiny jaws and tiny minds can manage it. I figure that if you check with your doctor to make sure that your body IS absorbing B12 (and that's not to do with diet but your body's ability to do so) and there's no problem, then you just need to make sure you have a balanced diet - and I'm sure everyone here is doing that. Many of us do rely on nutritional yeast etc., others supplement with B12. But you know, there are precious few people who have ever had a Vitamin B12 deficiency, or so I understand. As for the rest - it can happen to anyone, regardless of diet. But hey, see your doc and have the tests; it's easier on the nerves! I guess I'm pretty relaxed about this. I'm going to be 68 in a couple of months, I've been vegan a few years and veggie for a lot longer, and my doc is astounded at my health. The same for my dh, who goes to the same medic. It helps that she is also lacto-veggie although not vegan (which she admires but can't quite come to for cultural reasons). But hair? Oh, not nice to get it thinning out! See which one of those suggestions in the link I sent seems most likely! Best of luck. This is one reason why there exists such a huge gulf between carnivores and veggies. It also does nothing to positively influence someone to try veggie eating. I realize this is your group and you can say whatever you want . . .I just don't understand why you would risk alienating anyone who may be here trying to get support for going veggie all the way. Guest guest
Hi Tina. I am the person who wrote the email asking about hair loss, and I think your note was very well written and well thought out. I am sorry, but I dont get people either sometimes. They say they have a goal, but then shoot theirself in the foot. Guest guest
Hi, Jan, when I first started to be a near vegetarian a few years ago, I too had hair loss problem. I believe a combination of the following help solve my hair loss problem: (a) Taking hair supplement daily (b) Taking Multi-vitamin daily © Taking vitamin C 100mg daily (d) Taking about 1.5 liters of water daily (e) Almost no processed food except coffee and bread (f) At least 1 apples and 1 orange daily and sometimes banana, raw carrot, raw tomato. (g) For practical reason, I seldom take other vegetables. (h) At least one meal of fat-free multigrain porridge daily. (h) Mainly high fiber, low fat, low salt, low sugar, low protein near vegetarian diet although according to some sources a person needs to take more protein to stop hair loss. I hope my experience is useful to you as a reference. Guest guest
Newsun suggested, inter alia: > (h) Mainly high fiber, low fat, low salt, low sugar, low protein near vegetarian diet although according to some sources a person needs to take more protein to stop hair loss. What I'm interested in is your comment about 'although according to some sources a person needs to take more protein to stop hair loss'. I trust you don't mean dead animal protein than consumed on a near vegetarian diet? Indeed there are excellent _vegetarian_ (and vegan) ways of obtaining protein, if that's what is needed to control hair loss. But _is_ it? Have a look at this article from Vegsource which actually relates to vegans (who don't of course eat any animal protein, from either dead or living animals): http://www.vegsource.com/articles/harris_hair_loss.htm Hope that helps a bit. Good luck! Best, Pat
Guest guest
I've had hair loss for the past few years. It started after I had to be on strong steroids for my kidneys failing. It still comes out, I take flax seed oil as a supplement, and I will be starting to take hair supplements as soon as I am off of the antibiotics my doc has me on right now. I have a veg friend at work and she was taking the weight loss pills, which left her hair thin. She told me about the hari supplements she got at Sally beauty supply, and how they have worked. So I went and got some. Patricia , Jan <starfishgirl529 wrote: > > Good morning. > > I wonder if anyone here has run into this problem, and what they did to resolve it.
