Guest guest
Definitely still here, Pat! Keeping busy in New Hampshire. My passions are nutrition and chess. I tried a new fruit or two this summer and a green cauliflower who's name I cannot remember right now (not the broccoflower you see in the supermarkets). Have some pictures of it that I may eventually post on the blog, but I want to get the name again first. As for the fruit, one was a mango nectarine. You can see it here: http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog/2008/07/31/hybrid-fruits-mango-nectarine/ To Your Health, -Erin http://www.vegandonelight.com - drpatsant Sunday, September 07, 2008 4:28 PM ROLL CALL - AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK Moving into a new season and a fresh way of looking at the group (Changes ahead? Guest guest
I'm still here. Jan in northern New York state - Jefferson County. Garden mostly taken over by weeds as my disability problems increased over the summer. But still have some fall greens showing through. Tried (again) green peppers over the summer - successfully! Can not remember being able to eat them - cooked or raw - without digestive upsets before in my life. (I am 69). Soy burger mix recall has depleted my stock for the winter - but expecting a delivery (food co-op) of replacement 'Nature's Burger Mix' this week. Also getting more into whole grains (and less processed pasta) as a basis for my meals - with veggies and occasionally fruit in the mix. Worried about the prices for fresh produce this winter - and the heating costs. Will be making lots of soup - and brewing lots of tea. Heating from the inside. Guest guest
Susan here in central Ct. Spend most of my time taking care of pets. Involved in rabbit rescue, volunteer with a parrot club. Have 10 pets of my own, different species. Have a child. Work part time. Have a hubby who plays in a band. I used to hate baked beans. This summer at a cook out I tried them again and thought they were not bad so bought some vegetarian baked beans and now I like them so will buy them more often. Still trying to go vegetarian but I really have a problem trying to figure out how to start. I just picked up some books at a tag sale recently. Maybe some ideas there. My husband and son are not with me on this. I did good for about 3 months than started feeling really tired so figured I was not doing this correctly. So went back to a little chicken. My friend who is vegetarian said start cutting things out a little at a time. So I am peddling along. But still after seeing a gross movie and being told and seeing horror stories from being involved in animal rescue... ....I really don't want to eat any meat anymore. Just have to learn and figure out the correct balance of things. I get overwhelmed easily. So I have to take 1 step at a time in figuring out what to eat that is simple for now. Also have to learn how to shop in the grocery store. My husband thought he was doing me a favor by picking up frozen veggie burgers alot. I told him I can't live on those! -- Susan, Tabitha & Pumpkin Pie, Six & Drifter, Jordan, Iceberg, Peanut, Samantha, Baily & Nokki -------------- Original message -------------- " drpatsant " <drpatsant Moving into a new season and a fresh way of looking at the group (Changes ahead? Guest guest
Hi, I'm still Lizzy and I'm still here, athough I'm still pretty much just an occasional lurker. I always respond to your requests to check in though and I actually think it's a wonderful idea. I wish more group moderators would do that. It's always interesting to see where the other group members are from and what they've been up to. Anyway, I still live in beautiful downtown New Westminster BC Canada, I still work for Amnesty International Canada and I still spend most of my spare time either volunteering with an animal rescue organization called Little Mischief Rescue, or looking after my own pets. I still have many more pets and foster pets than I probably should have, and all but the cat are vegetarians now. Recently my elderly dog had to go onto a vegetarian diet due to multiple health problems that ruled out all other prescription dog diets. He is actually doing quite well on it. I even add a few herbs now and then to spice it up for him a bit (and yes my vet says it's okay to do that.) I'm a pretty big fan of fruits of all types so I can't really think of anything new that I've recently tried, but I am a total Cherry monster and when they are in season I can never get enough! They do have to be fresh though, and the closer to fresh picked the better. Guest guest
Hi, I'm Candace and still here. I got a teaching job - after applying for TWO DECADES! I teach computer K-8 and love it. The staff is cool about my being a vegetarian. I plan to let the students know, soon. I like to try the various Coconuts that Walmart offers. When I talk to Kenny Hulshof and Jay Nixon (running for Gov of MO) and other candidates - I will plug Vegetarian lifestyle as much as I can. Raw milk is still $3.50 for 1/2 gal and freerange eggs just went from $2 to $2.50 here because of corn price increases. I got a nice blind date for my daughter btw, but not vegetarian. I'm still looking for my son, 22, 6', 180#----shy. If any young vegetarians are out there! My older son, also a vegetarian with a vegetarian girlfriend is looking for a GOOD JOB in ST LOUIS or a distance job he can do from there! --- On Sun, 9/7/08, Lizzy OSullivan <ratanist wrote: Lizzy OSullivan <ratanist Re: ROLL CALL - AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK Sunday, September 7, 2008, 4:36 PM Hi, I'm still Lizzy and I'm still here, athough I'm still pretty much just an occasional lurker. Guest guest
Yes, I am still here and as of now, I have been a vegetarian for 32 years. Recently, I have developed a gluten allergy at about the same time I was diagnosed with lyme. I have always been a cook, but with the lyme treatment, I have no energy to cook. So, with considerable expense, I have been eating out of the deli @ my local food coop to survive. On a good note, I made pancakes out of quinoa flour today. Even, my gluten eating husband said they were amazingly good. Right now, our local heirloom tomatoes are simply amazing. I eat them like fruit. At first our local coop just had local tomatoes. Now they have many varieties including yellow ones, brandywine, striped ones, etc. Every year, I look forward to them and they have not disappointed me this year. Guest guest
Hi everyone,  Marie checking in from Haarlem in the Netherlands.  What do I like to do? Well, I collect cookbooks (sad but true!), I enjoy reading, writing, listening to classical music, travel and taking some tentative baby steps towards learning a bit about photography. Oh yes, I also love vegetarian cooking.  I can't say that I really discovered any 'new to me' fruits or vegetables this summer but I did become reacquainted with cherries. I spent several weeks in England in July/August and I was delighted to find delicious, large cherries (ones from which you could quite literally take two bites). They weren't cheap but I did allow myself the occasional indulgence. I love cherries and I haven't seen or tasted such delicious ones in recent years.  Cheers to everyone from Marie --- On Sun, 7/9/08, drpatsant <drpatsant wrote: drpatsant <drpatsant ROLL CALL - AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK Sunday, 7 September, 2008, 10:28 PM Moving into a new season and a fresh way of looking at the group (Changes ahead? Guest guest
Piers here, age 67, originally from UK but leading a rather nomadic existence lately, at present staying a few months in a holiday park near Amersfoort (Netherlands) but with ambitions to return to Portugal where I spent several months lately. Interested in classical music (listening) and spending time with computers, don't read as much as I used to unless it's via the internet. Not really a new discovery of mine but my favourite vegetable by far is paksoi (bok choy) which belongs to the Chinese cabbage family but has its own rather sharp taste which appeals to me very much. I use it in stir-fry vegetables or added to stir-fry noodles, but sometimes just cook it.
