Guest guest
Hi Susan,  Starting anything new is usually a bit overwhelming, and changing your diet is no exception.  I found this article which may help you. It contains some good information about becoming a vegetarian and also has some links at the end to further articles which may be of interest to you.  http://zenhabits.net/2007/08/how-to-become-a-vegetarian-the-easy-way/  My late first husband was not a vegetarian. Although I am a vegetarian, at that time I didn't find it a problem to cook meat for him. (I'm not sure how I would feel about that now but we are talking almost 20 years ago). I found that it was quite easy to prepare many dishes we could both enjoy. I used recipes which could be more or less fully prepared as vegetarian dishes then have meat added to his serve at the last minute. Things such as stir fries, fried rice, pasta dishes etc all work well. I think it is easier to cater for a household consisting of both vegetarians and non-vegetarians if you move away from the idea of meat as the main component of the meal and the vegetables as an accompaniment.  You may also be able to find cookbooks specifically for vegetarians cooking for non-vegetarians. One I can recommend is 'Virtually Vegetarian' by Paul Gayler. All the recipes are vegetarian but many of them have suggestions for how to make them suitable for non-vegetarians by adding the relevant ingredients after the dish is prepared.  I know there are other similar books available but this is the only one I own.  There is also a very interesting blog article you might find useful. It's entitled  How a single family with two carnivores, one vegetarian, and one almost vegetarian manage day-to-day  and is from the blog  http://almostvegetarian.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-single-family-with-two-carnivor\ es.html  The article is written by a non-vegetarian but looks at the logistical problems of cooking for a household where different members have different dietary preferences.  I hope this information will help you a little.  Cheers from Marie in Haarlem, Netherlands  --- On Sun, 7/9/08, bunmomsue <bunmomsue wrote: bunmomsue <bunmomsue Re: ROLL CALL - AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK Sunday, 7 September, 2008, 11:35 PM Susan here in central Ct. Spend most of my time taking care of pets. Involved in rabbit rescue, volunteer with a parrot club. Have 10 pets of my own, different species. Have a child. Work part time. Have a hubby who plays in a band. I used to hate baked beans. This summer at a cook out I tried them again and thought they were not bad so bought some vegetarian baked beans and now I like them so will buy them more often. Still trying to go vegetarian but I really have a problem trying to figure out how to start. I just picked up some books at a tag sale recently. Maybe some ideas there. My husband and son are not with me on this. I did good for about 3 months than started feeling really tired so figured I was not doing this correctly. So went back to a little chicken. My friend who is vegetarian said start cutting things out a little at a time. So I am peddling along. But still after seeing a gross movie and being told and seeing horror stories from being involved in animal rescue... ....I really don't want to eat any meat anymore. Just have to learn and figure out the correct balance of things. I get overwhelmed easily. So I have to take 1 step at a time in figuring out what to eat that is simple for now. Also have to learn how to shop in the grocery store. My husband thought he was doing me a favor by picking up frozen veggie burgers alot. I told him I can't live on those! -- Susan, Tabitha & Pumpkin Pie, Six & Drifter, Jordan, Iceberg, Peanut, Samantha, Baily & Nokki ------------ -- Original message ------------ -- " drpatsant " <drpatsant > Moving into a new season and a fresh way of looking at the group (Changes ahead? Could be!) your moderators need to know how many of you are still out there. Would you, therefore, please respond to this message and, while you are doing so, tell us a little about yourself - e.g. where you are now and what you like to do, etc. ALSO, for the sake of discussion and interest, please take a moment to answer the query below. QUESTION: What vegetable or fruit have you tried for the first time or rediscovered over the summer (or winter, of course, if you're below the equator)? What is it? If none (really?), then what is your favourite that you have eaten of most? The more participation the better in this group, so let's hear from you!
