Hi all!

I'm Martha from Moscow, ID and I love this email group and all the

chat and recipes here! I'm going back to school after a hiatus of ~20

years to raise my sons, and I'm getting a degree in foreign

languages. I also love to hike (with my Jack Russell terrier), read

and cook.

Vegetable I rediscovered, and introduced my boys to this summer:

kohlrabi

Fruit we discovered: plumcot (?), a cross between a plum and an

apricot (delicious!)

Best wishes,

Hello,

My Name is Seetha Natarajan. I originally hail from India, but am currently

residing in Texas, USA. The new vegetable I tried this summer is Asparagus, and

the new fruit I ate is Blackberries. Both of these are not available in India.

Thanks

Hi!

I'm still here also.  Rebecca from Alberta, Canada.  I love to try out new

vegetarian and vegan recipes, take lots of photographs and work on writing my

first novel.  In answer to your question: the new fruit I have tried this year

is ground cherry (grown in my mother's raised beds).  They were delicious!  Ta

for now.

Hi everyone,

Wonderful response to the roll call; who knew we had all these people from

far and wide on the list? And I enjoyed reading everyone's mini-histories,

if we can call them that.

I live in rural Saskatchewan, Canada, on a farm that produces organic BEEF!!

Yes, me, the vegetarian wanna-be ... well, it's not my business (though I

was asked to invest, I declined; I refuse to support myself or make money

that way, and my spouse is not my financial support either)(I'm a freelance

editor with plenty of work, thanks) and I am encouraging my spouse to get

out of it, but that is a long road as they have about 200 of the great

beasts and you can't just up and sell them all at once whenever the mood

strikes you. There has to be a method to the madness. Also, he is a serious

meat-lover and will probably always want to raise at least one or two of the

animals to provide it for himself. So it's an aspect of life I can't ignore.

We do have some kafuffles about it, particularly over the one year I refused

to cook meat at all, and then now because, though I will cook it

occasionally if I get a craving for it, I prefer not to. That really irks

him, but tough -- he can cook his own damn meals any time, and that would be

no skin off my nose. As a matter of fact, I wish he'd cook more often than

he does. A little more cleanup and dishes wouldn't hurt this relationship,

either.

My interests? Well, I love music and singing, and read quite a bit; I like

books and blogs, and read tarot cards. I walk quite a bit, and have a large

flower garden. New fruits or veggies this year? Can't think of any.

That's me.

Hi, I'm here, Donna 48 in Virginia with 2 boys 6 and 3 and a husband with

cholesterol 20points elevated. I've been successful in sneaking some veggies

in my older son's foods for a while now. Trying to convert everyone to

Hi,

I'm from Northern Virginia and although I don't post, I do like to

lurk.

I have tried almost every vegetable out there so I can't say I tried

soemthing new this summer. What I have been eating the most of is

tomatoes, starting with the plum tomatoes I grew myself to the

variety I am now getting from the CSA farm I belong to.

I am trying to stay in season for both fruits and vege's so the fruit

I ate the most of has been peaches. Now those are pretty much gone

and apples should be right around the corner.

One of the interesting things I've done this summer is to join a

discussion group sponsored by the Chesapeake Earth Institute. The

group is reading a book called " Menu for the Future " and it talks a

lot about current farming practices, organic vs. non-organic, eating

in the season, gov't subsidies, etc. We have done some food based

activites on this as well such as canning fresh tomatoes and making

our own peach preserves. Things I've never done. It's been a blast

and super interesting.

I have not eaten much new this summer BUT have developed a new and

deeper relationship with Brussels Sprouts and asparagus . I have

always liked these but really took advantage of the farmers Market

and got creative and really enjoyed them. ( last summer was

Kohlrabi...)

Old Standards- of course the fresh Cukes and fresh herbs growing in

my garden and at the Farmers Market.

This summer I tried dried apricots and liked them a lot.  Apricots is something

in

which I tried to eat many years past but didn't like them.  Of course, we know

how our taste changes after becoming vegetarian/vegan!

Speaking of it, I couldn't eat a lot of vegetables and was not much of a fruit

eater prior to the change.

New to my diet also is parsnips, sweet potatoes & rutabaga!

Things I enjoy doing are:  cooking, walking/going to parks, frisbee golf,

reading (specifically science, nutrition, self-help/improvement),

mini golf, getting together often w/friends and/or family for gaming!

list not exhaustive :--)

good day

High time I answered this message!

I'm still here in southwestern Ontario with dh, my little blind beagle and her

cat. My dh and I share our food preparation (vegan), so we don't have the

problems experienced by those of you living in a 'mixed' household. You have my

admiration.

This summer's veggies/fruits? Well, I did try for the first time shira plums and

some lovely 'green zebra' heirloom (which for some reason I keep calling

'heritage') tomatoes. Otherwise I fell across, almost literally, some lovely

purple cauliflower that made me just gasp at how pretty it was. I couldn't find

it again, though, so just had the one. I have also rediscovered Chinese broccoli

- a delightful addition to our intake of crucifers.

What else? Nothing much, I'm afraid. My health is good, with just the occasional

back or hip problem that plagues me from time to time (it's the back today, for

variety; I blame yesterday's rain) and spoils my mood. But the sunshine has been

glorious and we are NOT ready for autumn let alone winter. 12 C this morning,

but 21 C this afternoon - so betwixt and between summer and fall.

Lovely to hear from all those wonderful members who have written in so far! Some

of you have given me great ideas for things to look for at the market!!!!! And

of course it is always lovely to catch up on what you've all been doing. Lots to

talk about!!

Love and hugs to you all,

Pat (Co-owner with Piers and Marie)

I'm Tina in Western Illinois. I'm a veggie in a carni family. I've

recently moved here from Missouri, and now I live in a small city

where I am centrally located and can walk to the farmer's market 3

times a week to keep myself supplied in beautiful veggies.

This summer I tried eggplant for the first time, and I love it,

especially in spicy roasted eggplant dip. It is great for breakfast!

I also tried kohlrabi, but was not thrilled with it, it tasted like a

bland, watery version of turnip. Oh well, I guess you can't like them

all.

Hi, this summer we planted a big garden. There are two vegetables I've tried

this summer. One is collard greens and the other is Queensland Blue Squash

(pumpkin). Both were awesome! The QBS tastes like butternut squash and freshly

picked collards were a real surprise. I expected it would be bitter, but wasn't.

It does take a long time to cook & was great in stir fry.

Other than that I have been eating healthier. I have given up a lot of foods

that have kept me in a sugar habit..not good for diabetes.

So, I'm still here and trying new spices all the time.

Hello all,

I'm still here in Toronto. Vegetarian but trying to make the

transition to vegan.

A new fruit I tried was a Pluot. It's a cross between a plum and a

nectarine I think. I've heard them called Dragon Eggs. Yummy but they

don't really fit into my quest to eat more locally.

where you are now: at home

what you like to do: I LOVE to eat.

QUESTION: What vegetable or fruit have you tried for the first time or

rediscovered over

the summer (or winter, of course, if you're below the equator)? What is it? If

none (really?),

then what is your favourite that you have eaten of most?

I have rediscovered and/or tried in a different manner:

Carrots and Onions

For quicker cooking process, I tend to peel (with a veggie peeler) strips of

carrots and keep them in the fridge in an airtight plastic container until I am

ready to cook with them. I also cut onions into rings and store them in the

fridge in the same manner. When I'm ready to cook them, I heat some EVOO in a

pan and put the carrots in and then the onions...they don't take long to cook

because remember, they are in (carrot) strips and (raw onion) rings. You can add

a little kosher salt or some freshly ground pepper...whatever suits your

personal taste. I think it's a great way to eat carrots but remember, don't cook

them to death, you want to have some nutrients left.

AND

Yellow Squash and Onions

I don't prepare the Squash ahead of time because I have a feeling it won't keep.

I cut the yellow sqash into um...well sort of like chips, (think fifty-cent

pieces). I don't slice them as thin as potato chips...perhaps 1/4 of an inch or

so. I heat some EVOO and add the yellow squash and then add the raw onions

(rings). Of course, yu can add a little kosher salt and/or pepper or whatever

tickles your fancy but don't overdo it and don't cook all the nutrients out.

With either of these recipes, you can slice the raw onion rings in half if you

don't care for rings. Any way you slice them, they're still onions..... Also,

you decide how crunchy (or not crunchy) you want them to be. You decide whether

to use salt and/or pepper or any other seasoning you can think of. If you thik

of some other ways, please, do share.

ENJOY!

MB

P.S. Sometimes, I add a few sesame seeds in with the carrots and onions during

the cooking process but that's just me.

I'm here at home with a new puppy she is a Bichon, my other dog was killed

Friday, and the kids wanted another one right away to help them and my self with

the loss of our family member. Whe is doing pretty good, she is still whinning

for her family. I have a bad problem with my jaw, so eating raw veggies is out,

except I can eat tomatoes and cucumbers they are somewhat soft. I need to make

more brown rice, and beans for my salad. I try to eat nuts I can eat walnuts as

they are not as hard. But pumpkin seeds are just to hard for my jaw. I think

quiche will work with broccoli. Well I have to go as am trying to can

eldeberries, and apples. I have a 5 gallon bucket of pears also. Debbie in Nebr.

Where I am now...I am currently taking my second-to-last class for my bachelor's

degree in psychology (I will graduate in May) and working at my school as a

secretary in a residence hall.

What I like to do...I love movies (lately I've been really into classics, and

finally saw Casablanca for the first time at the age of 33!), books (currently

reading Eat, Pray, Love), my cat Jackie (of course, ALL animals are loved!),

listening to all kinds of music, spending time with my family, friends, and

partner Rick, and...COOKING!  I tend to want to cook more as the weather cools

down...I guess I get lazy in the hot summertime!

QUESTION: What vegetable or fruit have you tried for the first time or

rediscovered over

the summer (or winter, of course, if you're below the equator)? What is it? If

none (really?),

then what is your favourite that you have eaten of most?

My summer favorites are pretty consistent...fresh homegrown tomatoes, cukes,

green peppers, and canteloupe.  With the weather cooling down, I'm looking

forward to things like cranberries, sweet potatoes, and baked squash.

Peace and hugs,

AKM

Our favorite this summer (and all summers)--tomatoes!
