Guest guest
Be sure your eating three times a day with no snacking only choosing fruits vegetables and grains. This will help reset your body's digestion. I fell into eating a lot of vegetarian junk during transitioning into a veg. Your life seems very stressful which could be the real root of the problem. You need to have a good early waking schedule that you follow consistantly going to bed by 11:00. You need to find time to take care of you. Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra was a lifesaver for me in getting my life organized and controlling my stress and of course Deepak recommends a vegetarian lifestyle for optimal wellness! Guest guest
I have been veg for over four years, and lost a total of about 95lbs. I'm still about 20lbs overweight for my heighth, I am 5ft. over the past couple of week I've gained about six lbs. but i've seen a change in my eating habits, I eat too much bread which is a convenience food for me, and also french fries and onion rings. I know that when my digestion is working properly I feel alot better and it is easier for me to lose weight, so I put alot into my digestive health when I eat right. Guest guest
Hi, I am a near vegetarian. I have reduced my weight successfully by Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition (CRON) without exercise. My current BMI is 19.99. My BMI once reached 31.57. Healthy range of BMI should be 18.5 to 22.9 (or 23.9 or 24.9) depending on the source of information. The following is my experience in D.I.Y. weight loss without exercise for your reference only. (1) Have a good electronic weighing scale (also called bathroom scale). (2) Pass urine first after waking up in the morning. Immediately measure the body weight with only inner wear and the same scale. (3) Find out the estimated calories needed for the day by visiting websites like http://www.am-i-fat.com/calmaintain.html http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/calories-burned.php?metric=1 (4) Keep a food diary daily with utmost discipline. (5) Each food item in the food diary should include the calorie of the food and other key information like weights of dietary fiber, protein, fat, sugar (and sodium if possible). You may use a spreadsheet for this purpose. (6) If everyday, the total calories consumed is less than the calories needed by the body, overtime you will lose weight. For example, if in 4 weeks, the total calories consumed minus the calories needed by the body is 7000 kcal, a person should lose about 1 kg or 2.305 pounds without any physical exercise. Note: A kcal is a kilocalorie, which is 1000 calories. In many food labels or nutrition information sources, a calorie is the same as a kcal. (7) Normally I will consume at least 1200 kcal daily when I need to reduce or maintain my ideal weight. (8) Take Multi-vitamin daily (9) Take vitamin C 100mg daily (10) Taking about 1.5 liters of water daily (11) I hardly consume any processed food except coffee and bread (12) I eat a least 1 apple and 1 orange daily and sometimes banana, raw carrot, raw tomato. (13) For practical reason, I seldom take other vegetables. (14) I have at least one meal of easily prepared fat-free multigrain porridge daily. (15) My diet is mainly high fiber, low fat, low salt, low sugar, low protein near vegetarian diet. (16) Keep reading relevant books, surfing Internet and being a member of groups like to improve my nutrition literacy. I am not an expert in nutrition or medicine. I hope my experience is useful to you as a reference. Best regards, New Sun

Guest guest
I agree with " Richard's " post. I cut out bread, pasta, and rice, and limit my diet to tofu and beans, vegetables, fruit, eggbeater omelets, and I liberally spice my dishes with spices and curry pastes. I've just lost 20 pounds under this regime. Jerry
Guest guest
I agree about eating frequently. My son and I eat 3 meals a day with at least 2 snack times as well. We are born eating roughly every 3-4 hours and it makes sense that some doctors and nutritionalists say this should not change as we age (society has dictated the 3 large meals). We usually eat fruit as our snacks with other times having unsalted pretzels with hummus or trail mix etc. I don't do much brown rice or breads (my son does like his sandwiches though :--o) since we generally eat Rice, Millet or Aramanth cereal or oatmeal for breakfast. Since becoming vegan, almost 2 years ago, I have lost 30 pounds and am at a weight in which I should be for my height. I have found along the way that getting rid of simple sugars, excessive sea salt, staying away from excess vegetable oils (which will cause you to not be able to lose weight or gain weight) and incorporating more needed exercise the weight just came right off. Especially after getting rid of extra veg oils and the simple sugars--a huge plus! Simple sugars causes us to eat much more than we otherwise would and it depletes our phosphorus levels in your body and even puts you in the negative for it. I have not counted calories but only counted protein intake. PCRM says to take your body weight and multiply by 0.36 (I found it to actually be a little less than this percentage) and this is your protein intake to maintain your current weight. Add more or less according to amount of exercise you get. My son who is a toddler, since he is growing, he takes in more than I do..some days a lot more, :--) In regards to vitamins and herbs etc. I realized that when I ate animal products (even vegetarian still eating dairy) that I needed to every day take a multi-vitamin but after becoming vegan I noticed right away that the same vitamin and herb was way too much for me and when I cut them down (and had to cut back significantly) I felt much better. My body seems to operate far more efficiently than when I ate any animal products. Again, simple sugars, I must say seem to be a horrible poison to our bodies.. My husband is still a chicken and cheese eater and he cut out most simple sugars and he has lost 25 pounds so far and eats much less than he did before (as well as I)! You can also read online just how simple sugars cause this effect of making you hungry all the time. (seems like a lot of the food industry knows about it and uses it against us to make them bigger profits) best wishes, Louanne --- On Thu, 9/11/08, Richard <travler800 wrote: Richard <travler800 Re: Re: Ok Anyone having trouble maintaing or losing weight? Guest guest
I have weeks where I follow a strict veg diet. The cheese gets to me though, I have to at least taste it when it's around. And YOU KNOW tasting leads to EATING A BUNCH. I'm lactose intolerant, and should learn my lesson, when I eat dairy, I get bloated and " backed up " . I drink a glass of not from concentrate prune juice a night, partly for digestion partly to disturb my hubby. =) Patricia , Richard <travler800 wrote: > > 20 over here. Guest guest
Thanks for all the support and tricks everyone. I have had my thyroid checked. I started gaining 2 yrs ago with my new desk job. I bought a pedometer and I only get about 5000 steps in a average day.I eat fruit for breakfast with one cup of coffee. I drink 3-4 bottles of water. Ice tea is my downfall I drink one huge glass ( 220 cal) everyday. I eat a Amy's veggie meal for lunch or a salad. Dinner I just have vegetables if anything at all . In between a bannana or apple. I snack on nuts or a soy yoguart. --- On Wed, 9/10/08, Kaye <kayebillie_stain929 wrote: Kaye <kayebillie_stain929 Re: Ok Anyone having trouble maintaing or losing weight? Guest guest
Hi I live in Israel and posted on a local that I was looking for likeminded women who needed to lose weight but just couldn't do it alone. I got 27 replies and start a really nice group. My group has been running for a year now and 10 of the original members still come and some have left and others joined. I run this free of charge and expect a committment to take losing weight seriously and to come regularly to meetings and it really works. It really helps to have others in the same boat to diet with and we help each other by knowing we have to account to someone in the week. Everyone choses one person to email for the day and say what we are eating. By just writing it down you realise how many extra calories you consume by just tasting here and there when cooking and by finishing off the kids food so you don't waste etc. We meet once a week at my home and I weigh everyone and then we go around in a circle and talk about our week. Those who lost say what they did different that helped them and others get good tips. Those who were weak and didn't stick to a plan and put on say what they did wrong and everyone encourages them with better ideas and usually by the next week that person is back on track again. If you have the support of a friend even and no one at home to sabotage your good intentions that is a good start too. So far we have all lost more than 10 kilos ( 22 lbs) by just watching that we don't overeat and take smaller portions. Some of the women have even lost 50 lbs in just under a year. The thing is one has to do it as a way of eating sensibly and slowly and that way you aren't hungry and you keep it off. If you go on one of these mad fad diets you lose it but it comes back on again and even more so. One needs to cut out all white starches like white potatoes and replace them with say red sweet potatoes. Use brown rice and brown pasta. Only eat whole grain bread and keep the starchy carb down to minimum and replace them with lots of veggies instead. We all stopped eating stuff with sugar in it and make our own shakes with fresh fruit to replace unhealthy bought stuff. Another good tip is not to drink diet sodas.. the carbs in them just make one more hungry to have something sweet afterwards. Just drink a lot of water you see how much you enjoy it when you get used to it instead of stuff with sugar in it. If you drink a glass before a meal you wont be as hungry and wont feel the need to eat as much. It is important to burn off more than your intake so it is essential to walk as much as possible if you don't get to go the gym or do other exercise. Put your food on a smaller plate so it looks like more Always sit down and eat your meal at a table and never eat standing up because you will eat less if you see the food on your plate. If you eat out the pot or pan you will eat more than a normal portion. Ask for your salad dressing on the side in a restaurant so you can see how much you are putting on. When you add dressing at home measure it in a spoon instead of just pouring it over .. you will be surprised how many wasted calories you consume from a heavy hand. Don't eat the bread with your meals in a restaurant again just wasted calories Don't go shopping when you are hungry Don't keep temptation at home so you wont have something to binge on if you are looking to comfort eat If you feel hungry wait 20 minutes before you allow yourself to eat and more than likely you find your stomach got used to the feeling and you can do without the extra helping. As it is, they will have to make do with what's near them - not always as sensible or as supportive - or go online, eg. vegetarianslimming - which I co-host with member Cindi - it's been running since just after New Year 2003, and I was one of the first members, lucky me, because it supported me through my own weight loss and now maintenance. Guest guest
Hi Robin! Of _course_ you were simply asking a question - and perfectly proper it was too and so are the responses to it! These days everyone has to be concerned about their weight, and being vegetarian doesn't mean that one can forget about it (ask me! I gained weight as a vegetarian years ago and it's really really easy to do!!). We can talk about this some more, of course. And of course the post, although responding to a thread you started, was directed to the group as a whole and especially to the member I addressed - see below. I was just really explaining/apologizing to Joan, who had sent in some sensible weight-loss guidelines, and to others that it's not that kind of group. Also, some newbies to the group do join because they are making the transition to vegetarian to lose weight. (True - we moderators read the reasons they give on joining.) That's fine, we're happy to have them, but our recipes here are often the last thing you'd want to eat to lose weight, although most I think are healthy and many could easily be adapted. On this topic, have you - or has anyone else reading this - had a look at the book _Skinny Bitch_. It's a provocative title, I know, but I got the book out of the library some months ago when it was mentioned on another group. I think it's pretty good! (One of the author's also has a regular column in VegNews magazine btw.) Good to hear your sensible voice on this issue. I wish I could figure out what you're doing to gain that weight - you seem to be eating very well and very healthily indeed. It's a mystery, but one that needs to be solved - right? Love, Pat I am not using it as a weight loss group. I am veggie.
