Hi everyone,

Spurred on by Steve's comments about his new found liking for Indian food, I

wondered what ethnic cuisines other people enjoy most.

I love Indian food and another great favourite of mine is Middle

Eastern/Mediterranean based recipes.  Long live falafels!!

If you are looking for a good Middle Eastern vegetarian recipe book I can

heartily recommend " From the Tables of Lebanon " by Dalal A. Holmin and Maher A.

Abbas.  It isn't wildly expensive and it should be reasonably easy to track

down.  I have just checked Amazon and they have over 30 new and used copies

available.  I guess other online sellers would also have copies.  If glossy,

coffee-table cookbooks with lots of coloured photos appeal to you then this is

not the book for you!  There are no photos and only a few illustrations (of

techniques) but the recipes are great.

I'm interested to know which ethnic cuisines appeal to other members.

Cheers from Marie

I second this!  Please don't make me pick!  :-)  Of course, my latest " big

crave " was Thai, and I had pad thai with tofu twice last weekend!

I'd be hard pressed to state a favourite, but if my life depended on

an answer I suppose I'd say Thai. Yeah, definitely Thai. It's tricky

when we're out, though, because so many restaurants 'forget' until you

ask them specifically, that there's fish in that fish sauce! But of

course, not all Thai dishes _have_ to have that sauce to make them

taste good!

Good question, Marie. Anyone else have a question?

Love and hugs, Pat

Marie asked:

Of course the Indonesian cuisine - partly because it's the one I know

most about at the moment, but also because there are so many veg*n

possibilities in the daily menus - lots of different ways of using

tofu and tempeh, and the Gado Gado dish (vegetables with peanut sauce)

is easy to adapt depending on availability of ingredients. Side dishes

such as rempeyeh (also peanut based) can give variety as well as

providing an extra protein source. Conversion of the other main

recipes of the country to vegetarian form is straightforward, and as

with most Oriental cuisines the step from vegetarian to vegan is a

small one as dairy products are rarely used - just leave out the eggs!
