Hello everyone,

I'm new to this group and new to vegetarianism (hope that's spelled

right..hahaha) I am a cancer survivor and I have been reading up on

becoming a vegetarian for quite some time and I read a news article

today which talked about a healthier diet can lower risk of some

cancers. Well, that was the extra push I needed to begin my journey

today. I am so grateful for this group. I look forward to making new

friends and new recipes with just about everybody here. If you have

any suggestions or comments to help me through my transition, I would

be most appreciative.

Vicki,

I have a friend who has been in remission for over 10 years now and he

credits part of his recovery with eating organic, especially organic

milk!

Congrats on becoming veggie!

There is a book out, it's new...I have the old version:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?r=1 & ISBN=97815706714\

49 & ourl=New%2DBecoming%2DVegetarian%2FVesanto%2DMelina

Becoming Vegetarian, it was VERY useful to me when I was starting out.

I think the main thing you want to make sure you get enough protein,

vitamins (as much from your food as you can, you may need some extra

supplements) I have a dietician for a mom, so I was lucky to have her

advice along the way. If you have any specific questions, feel free to

email me.

Welcome to the group, Vicky :)

Yes indeed, a healthy eating pattern (and veganism can certainly be that) can

assist in helping the body fight off illness, including some cancers - or so I

have been reading for some time now. It's an added incentive to many to follow a

lifestyle which we feel is right for us. The point is, of course, not so much

what we do NOT eat but what we DO - because vegetarians and vegans can have

unhealthy diets too. A well balanced diet, with lots of different colours

(colours are an easy way to remember!) of fruits and vegetables, is key. And as

you will also have read, exercise goes with the nutritional part of the

lifestyle to keep the body in better health. Talk about win win!

So I want to give you a warm welcome and wish you all the luck in the world.

You've done exactly the right thing by giving up me*t (by which we mean, of

course, not just 'red' meat or even 'just' the flesh of land animals but also

all bird life and water life). Life is precious, yes? :)

My dh and I became vegetarian and then vegan for the animals, but we have gone

on to appreciate all the wonderful health benefits of this way of eating. It is

not to be underestimated.

As Marie has said, have a good look in the Files - we have some awesome recipes.

Some are marked according to whether they are ovo, ovo-lacto, lacto or vegan -

but most are not. Nevertheless, a quick glance will let you know whether there

are ingredients you prefer not to eat and we will be happy to advise you how to

convert a recipe to vegan if at all possible.

Looking forward to hearing more from you. Enjoy the group!

Best, Pat (Co-owner with Piers and Marie)
