Guest guest
Well I fasted for 4 days prior to Thanksgiving and that was it. What ultimate truths did I obtain? The fact that my family is a bunch of morons! That was the ultimate truth I obtained while fasting :-)

Actually, I already knew that but what can ya do? It was really a pitiful sight to see my S-I-L's 20 year old daughter force a bottle of formula down her 6 month old baby's throat. He kept turning his head and clearly didn't want it but she forced him to eat. I asked why she wasn't breast feeding and she krinkled her nose and shook her head like it was something disgusting. Wellllll that's when I tried to explain to her that formula is no bueno. She said she was switching to nonfat milk in a few months. Oh, that's just great! Let a cow nurse your baby instead of you nursing him yourself. As you can imagine, the discussion didn't go real well because my two idiot brothers jumped in to her defense. What the? They don't even believe milk is good for humans but there ya go. Always on the attack. What else is new? I left soon afterwards so there ya have it. I hope yours was happy. Guest guest
Kadee, We had a great Thanksgiving over at my Mom's house. My son who is living in a dorm/apartment at college out of town, brought his two new rats he got. They are so cute! Two females; one white, and one brown. My son and my brother spent some time before lunch constructing a tall cylindrical cage out of hardware cloth for them so they can have more room, and also room to climb and exercise in. After lunch, they got to nibble on some green beans. My son says their absolute favorite thing is cheese, but he doesn't give them that very often. Thanks for sharing the pic of your rat! Is that, like, his very own pie????? LOL! Guest guest
Wonderful!! I love to see people appreciating rats. They are such wonderful little animals. That is especially funny to me about those two building a big cage for the rats, I have a homemade one that I worked really hard on and it is so much fun giving them things. He's good for not giving them too much cheese, it hurts their tummies. And no, that is not his very own pie!! That's my pie!! He did get some, though. All my rats, mice, and hamster got their very own little bowls of stuffing, potato salad, stuffed mushrooms, and pie. Now I have a room full of very sleepy, very happy rodents. Glad you liked the picture! Paula <paulakward wrote: Kadee, We had a great Thanksgiving over at my Mom's house. Guest guest
Kadee, Cute animals and nice digs for them ( love the dogs...) ). My two dogs sleep where they want most times, too, but when they shed, as my 14 year old white and brown hound does, that is not too cool for dark dress clothes. Normally, I keep a couple of empty small laundry baskets on my sofa and that deters them; however, this week I have been home and they have found the sofa a nice comfy place to rest, when noone is looking...lol. My dogs enjoyed stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey and gravy...my husband is a meat eater and he requested turkey for Thanksgiving (the first that we have cooked together; he cooked the turkey and I made the dressing from day old buns, celery, onions and canned broth and mashed real potatoes). We were supposed to have had a guest, but he had to back out and take his daughters out for lunch to the Cracker Barrel, since their mom had gone out of town. Hubby will eat meatless meals many times (spicey lentils and couscous are his favorites), but he does love his meat. Thanks for sharing your pics with everyone. Guest guest
They just got their ordinary feasts on Thanksgiving because I was tired from feeding the three humans, but they didn't mind because they can't tell time or read calendars. I gave them some red pepper as a treat the next day and there is cucumber waiting to be cleaned, peeled, and sliced in the fridge now. Of course, they did get their usual carrots, romaine, spring mixed greens, parsley, pellets, timothy hay, and orchard grass. :-) -ginger slave to Butterscotch and Mike , Kadee M <abbey_road3012 wrote: > > Oh how funny, I love guinea pigs. Guest guest
Happy Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate this day, whether with family and friends or quietly by themselves. As you know, we Canadians had our Thanksgiving over a month ago, but my dh and I will be thinking of American friends and family members when we sit down to our own meal today. And of course, as at every time we all have something to celebrate, I ask: What's for dinner? (No no no LOL Puhleez don't anyone tell us if you're eating something non-vegetarian!!!! LOL) Any new ideas for a splendid cruelty-free Thanksgiving feast? Love to hear! Guest guest
Hi Everybody, Warning - these are not low-fat recipes! Leek and mushroom stuffing from the Epicurious recipe and added pine nuts, water chestnuts, wild rice and lots of herbs. It turned out wonderful. Portobello mushroom gravy from Epicurious -- I'm not sure whether I'm happy about the flavor. I'll have to dink around with it further and see what it needs. I got pre-cooked rolls from Whole Foods that I'm just going to heat up. Homemade cinnamon ice cream to go with the applie pie I picked up at our local apple farm. My mom is cooking a tofurkey, mustard greens (thanks mom!). Sister in law is making pumpkin pie, fruit salad, sweet potatoes. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! Guest guest
This looks so very good, I'm almost ready to try them all out at once - but maybe later in the season! You're right, not exactly low fat. But a good recipe is a good recipe, right? So . . . . I looked up the leek and mushroom stuffing - sounds wonderful - and was figuring out how to make it less fatty - not difficult, I think And remember, that recipe was for 10 or 12. Divide that cup of butter (wow!) by 12 and you wouldn't have so very much - and thinking of making that stuffing for 2 persons (our household, discounting for purpose of this exercise our beagle who cannot eat mushrooms) made me think of sauteeing in stock. That's what I did for our Canadian Thanksgiving (albeit for a different recipe) and it worked just fine Not quite sure which of the Epicurious gravy recipes you used - but likewise fat can usually be kept down to a dull roar if not eliminated. (Just a thought for next year - no hassle - just trying to be helpful!) And the rest of the menu? Fantastic!!!!!! Curious about that zucchini pie - got a recipe to share? I love zucchini and just made up a soup (well, I had zucchini I needed to use up and time to experiment) a couple of days ago that was very good and I have a request to make it a regular part of our weekly menu. Hmmm. Anyway, thanks for all that. Lots of imagination, love of food, and lots of time and effort went into what looks like a fantastic menu that should please everyone! Hope the day itself was up to the food!!!!! Love and hugs, Pat --- The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast.(Oscar Wilde) Warning - these are not low-fat recipes! Guest guest
Hi Pat, Thanks for your good wishes! The other day I heard of the NPR (National Public Radio) Tiki Thanksgiving (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php? storyId=16446982) and thought it sounded like a lot of fun. I made a vegetarian alternative of their Tiki recipes, such as Tofu loaf but with the same spices and formed into a Tiki god shape as they describe, and always using vegetarian broth wherever they mention meat broths. I also made a homemade gravy instead of the store bought they recommended. I put on the Hawaiian music station on our satellite and we all wore artificial leis and shell necklaces, and in the evening my husband made Tiki drinks. It was quite a party! The cake mentioned on the NPR site ( " Flaming Coconut Pineapple Apple Pumpkin Upside-Down Pie Cake " ) turned out great! It really worked and tasted very good, and the kids loved the " flaming " part! The other tasty recipe was the " Tiki " green bean casserole that uses a Thai coconut sauce and peanut butter to give a Thai flavor to the traditional green bean casserole. And the Hawaiian bread stuffing was tasty as well. I usually don't make the marshmallow yams (too sweet for my taste) so the Tiki yam recipe was only so-so in my opinion, although the sautéed bananas certainly added a good flavor. Adding mangoes to the cranberries is a great idea, and I think I'll do that every year from now on. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving (or Thursday for non- U.S. citizens)! ¸..· ´¨¨)) ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ ((¸¸.·´* Martha " Bring me that horizon... Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!
