Beans: Without Gas

Perhaps this list has done this thread before, but it can always be repeated.

What are your ideas for preparing beans w/o producing gas? What products can be

bought and trust that they have prepared their beans so they won't produce gas?

I have bought Vegetarian Beans but they still produce gas! Ugh!

What I know is that we are suppose to soak beans for at least 24 hrs until they

are almost sprouting.....throw away the water and cook for 30 minutes, throw

away that water, then finish cooking with fresh water....(My mom taught be to

soak for 12 hrs--NOT even to get rid of the gas.)

Putting baking soda in isn't really healthy is it? And it doesn't work well

anyway.

Your thoughts?

Happy Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate this day, whether with

family and friends or quietly by themselves. As you know, we Canadians had our

Thanksgiving over a month ago, but my dh and I will be thinking of American

friends and family members when we sit down to our own meal today.

And of course, as at every time we all have something to celebrate, I ask:

What's for dinner? (No no no LOL Puhleez don't anyone tell us if you're eating

something non-vegetarian! !!! LOL) Any new ideas for a splendid cruelty-free

Thanksgiving feast? Love to hear!

Love and hugs to all,

Pat

I always suggest that people add beans (or lentils) a little a time to their

diets - and that way their systems get used to them. It's a bit like asking how

you avoid gas with salads or green veggies or fruit imo. The thing is, those of

us who eat beans regularly (hah!) don't get bothered by gas. Just a thought.

HI All

You cannot avoid gas when you eat high fibrous foods, especially lentils. You

definitly must be drinking a lot of water along with high fibre foods. We

Indians add a lot of balancing agents like carom seeds, cumin seeds or fennel

seeds to the lentils while cooking them, according to one's taste. You can also

grind a little ginger and add it while cooking or add a pinch of asafoetida

powder. This usually helps!

Hope this helps!

Alton Brown did a show exclusively on Beans ( " Good Eats " on FoodTV). The

bottom line is, if you " process " (thoroughly chew) your food before your

body has to do the digestion, there will be less gas in your system. The

cause of the gas is the bacteria doing the digestion for you because the

beans were not broken down enough.

That's what I recall from the show, but if you get a chance to watch it,

you'll get a better understanding
