Guest guest
Yes, I checked it out, Rain That's one of my 'duties' (if you like) that I think I should observe before advising my lists of things such as this one. I snoped it, googled it, and checked news accounts. Result? Genuine I wish I could have reported otherwise. Guest guest
Apparently, peanut butter woes are not uncommon. I haven't touched a GS Cookie in some time, but not because of the peanut butter. This just gives folks *another* reason to avoid them. -Erin http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog - " Beth Renzetti " <elmothree2000 Sunday, January 18, 2009 10:36 AM Re: Peanut Butter Warning hmm. i just googled girl scout cookie peanut butter recall & found this: http://pediatrics.about.com/b/2007/02/14/peanut-butter-recall.htm which dates to 2/07! Guest guest
Some products will say " manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts ..... " . Should we be concerned about these products? Also, I think almond butter should be safe and I find it more tasty. This could be a good substitute. -Victoria vegetarianslimming ; ; vegetariansincanada: drpatsant: Sat, 17 Jan 2009 15:48:49 -0800 Peanut Butter Warning I am sure you will have all seen this warning or heard it on radio or TV, but just in case: Avoid ALL peanut butter products and peanuts and any food containing any of these until the USA's FDA give the All Clear. Guest guest
Reckon the usual reasons are good enough. If I'm to have a cookie, it'll be of my own making or at least a more wholesome variety. -Erin http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog - <bluezinnia Monday, January 19, 2009 12:45 AM Re: Peanut Butter Warning > Erin wrote: >> I haven't touched a GS Cookie in some time, but not >> because of the peanut butter. Guest guest
I'm guessing you don't have Girl Scouts in your life. Buying & eating GS cookies is more about supporting Girl Scouts than the cookie itself. And the Samoas are deeelicious! Guest guest
Awww, you make it sound like I'm heartless! LOL. I used to buy my fair share and found them yummy at the time (several varieties), but these days, I'd probably find them sickeningly sweet. -Erin http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog p.s. - We probably should drop this as off-topic. - " Beth Renzetti " <elmothree2000 Monday, January 19, 2009 9:52 AM Re: Peanut Butter Warning I'm guessing you don't have Girl Scouts in your life. Guest guest
A comment on the following: > I'm guessing you don't have Girl Scouts in your life. " The right adult at the right time can make an enormous difference > [for] kids ... one good relationship--one person who is there for > them--can make a huge difference. " I was a Girl Scout myself, long ago. But now that we know more about nutrition, I find myself thinking it's wrong for adults to indicate to Girl Scouts that the end justifies the means--wrong for a seemingly warm, caring adult to teach a child that it's somehow moral to increase other people's risk of future heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc., in the interests of making money. And wrong to give Girl Scouts the impression that it'll be reasonable for them to feed themselves and their own future children poor-nutritive-quality food. Maybe at least the trans fats have been removed from some or all of the Girl Scout cookie types--have they?--but the cookies are still low-nutrition, high-glycemic-index, white-flour, high-saturated-fat imitation foods that, in our low-exercise society, use up chunks of people's appetites so they don't fill up on vegetables, fruits, and a proper blend of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. But it's hard to know what the organization should do instead. If each Girl Scout troop assembled in a troop leader's kitchen and took the trouble to prepare, say, some healthful vegetable dish, from fresh ingredients, maybe even organically grown ingredients, with the purpose of selling that dish door to door or on the street, would health departments allow them to do that--or would the troop leader's kitchen fail some required health inspection? Our laws seem designed to lessen contagious diseases by increasing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. At the time when the pertinent laws were made, not much research information was available about the links between diet and degenerative disease. Guest guest
It is, alas, rather hard to avoid participating in the whole scam -- what is one supposed to do when the next door neighbor comes to one's front door, his little girls in tow (or perhaps, it's his little girls at one's front door, with their daddy in tow), to sell Girl Scout cookies? One feels under intense pressure to submit and put in an order. But seriously, are we really using rumours of salmonella as an excuse for not eating foods that have peanut butter *baked *into them?? That danger comes from eating *raw *foods -- the reason the USDA, etc., recommend not consuming *raw *eggs and being careful with the treatment of *raw *ch*ck*n. All the best, no hugs required, jrfm bluezinnia wrote: > Erin wrote: > >> I haven't touched a GS Cookie in some time, but not >> because of the peanut butter.
