Hi Lal,

I'm glad you can make use of some of the budget tips.  As you say, we can all do

with some help at the moment.

They say that the general health of people in the UK has never been better than

it was during the war when there were severe food shortages.  There are no food

shortages now but certainly many people are facing a shortage of money to buy

expensive foods.  Perhaps by returning to the thrifty meals of wartime we will

see the benefit of better health too.

Cheers from Marie

on youtube there is 90 year old lady that has produced a few videos with both

stories from her youth during the depression and recipes that her family made.

Yes, I see that a 93 yr old woman is showing depression recipes - but please,

everyone, be aware that neither her Poor Man's meal nor her Poor Man's Feast is

vegetarian - both contain me*t :(

The Depression was a bad time for almost everyone who lived through it - but

fortunately now we can do a bit better than canned peas with pasta or stale

bread with salt oil and hot water for a meal - at least I hope that most of us

can.

Thanks for the heads-up/wake-up call, winterchill :) These are not recipes I

think that any of us would recommend to our members. They are, however,

interesting as historical notes on the last time that we all faced such a

desperate economic crisis.

that's my 'job' ;) Interesting lady, if a bit old-fashioned when it comes to

what's 'healthy'.

i went back and watched a few more of her videos and really enjoyed them, Clara

is doing pretty well for being 93 years old and many of the recipes were

vegetarian and some of them look pretty good.

And while many can do better then canned peas and pasta there are still many

that can not.

And really some of those recipes could still be used in many households,

especially these days.   Not the meat ones but the others.

As for them being healthy, they are not great but they werent really all that

bad.

I loved that her mind is still sharp enough to tell a few of the stories from

her childhood.

Totally with you on that :) Clara is only 3 yrs older than my own mother, and I

agree she's doing well.

My own mother lived through the Depression, although in a different country, and

also WWII when in the UK there were very severe food shortages which many N

Americans don't understand even now. I grew up in that environment myself. It

has a longlasting effect on one's psyche as well as one's physical health.

Innovative recipes are always delightful to see. And, as I have mentioned, the

historical value of Clara's videos is important to all. We do, however, have

_different_ foods available to us now, for which we should all be thankful since

that means that, in N America and most of Europe at least, we can do better than

some of these Depression recipes. As for the so-called third world, they are

doing less well to put it mildly.

Thanks for your comments. I see Clara has been endorsed by a morning TV show

(USA-based), which brings her more into the limelight and therefore more to

people's imagination and sentiments. Go Clara.
