Guest guest
Hi Nikki How did your family enjoy the day? We have had a very nice time - enjoying all the presents, and too much food by far! Guest guest
Hi Jo It was pretty nice. Very relaxing, no pressure and most everyone enjoyed their gifts. The best part of course is Zak opening his though. I do need tho to find more for me in my own choices for these holidays. I am use to celebrating my beliefs solo, I just think that I do not give myself enough time and space to do so. But I am slowly realizing I need to re-prioritize things for myself or risk alienating everyone. Tis a really strange time for me right now. But I do know all will get better. Guest guest
HI Nikki I suppose it depends how open the rest of your family are to what you want to do. If not, maybe you could have an altar in another room for a short private ritual, or even go for a short walk to a quiet place. Guest guest
Hi Silver, and welcome to the group. You can get good info on which mainstream products are vegan from the Vegan Society's Animal Free Shopper. There's a handy pocket-sized print version which costs about a fiver and there's also a free online version at www.animalfreeshopper.com (you have to register first to use this, but that doesn't cost anything). It's not possible to be 100% vegan - there's always some aspect of your life which, if you dig deep enough, has some negative impact on animals (including other humans). But of course we all strive to be as vegan as we reasonably can. I used to live in Southampton a long time ago (Portswood) - at that time I think it had one veggie restaurant of the hippy/brown rice/ lentils persuasion, but I've no idea what it's like these days - I think it's probably changed a lot ? I just got back from my first trip to India - very vegetarian- friendly in the south but also very hard to be vegan there, due to the widespread use of dairy products in just about everything. Even plain rice is usually buttered. Guest guest
I agree Paul, Ghee would be the biggest problem, however, all you can do is tell the places you eat not to use it? I know this is impractical in places where they may not speak English, but there is vegan travel book I believe with phrases in many languages. I am sure that someone could have told you the phrase from the hotel? in the one or two major languages in the area you stayed in. Hope you had a good time ( even if it was on business) How did you cope with all the poverty/begging etc? The Valley Vegan................ Guest guest
Generally Indian food is not cooked to order, so it's not really possible to say that you'll have X, Y an Z without the ghee. Fortunately in the UK real ghee is expensive so most Indian restaurants here use vegetable ghee, but real ghee is relatively cheap in India so it's more common. Unless you cook all your food from scratch I don't think you're going to be able to avoid it entirely. As for English, most Indian people speak some English, as it's the lingua franca in a country of nearly a billion people speaking 20 or so different major languages and hundreds of minor languages. Begging/poverty etc - the general advice from people like Save the Children is to not give money to beggars but give some money to a local charity that helps the homeless/disabled/etc instead. Otherwise you just encourage dependence (and some really nasty practices that go with it) and the money you give is not used effectively. So that's what I did, anyway. All the stray dogs and the cows wandering the city streets and freeways etc were another matter - I don't know what you do to help those. I support HAAW who help these animals in Sri Lanka but I'm not aware of anyone doing similar work in India (?). Guest guest
Greetings Oluwa, one thing I particularly like that is mostly raw is shredded carrots, dried fruit, shelled, salted sunflower seeds (or any other nutmeat, chopped), and a little raw honey to bind together all rolled up in a flatbread or just served over raw greens and eaten without the bread. It would probably be good with a bit of finely chopped hot peppers for some heat to balance the sweetness of the honey, carrots and dried fruit. If you have some bitter greens to go in, that would probably taste good and would give sweet/salt/sour/heat which is so good together. Hope this helps, Jeanne in GA Now that's room service! Choose from over 150,000 hotels in 45,000 destinations on Travel to find your fit.
