Guest guest
Welcome Amy. I'm also a long-time vegan who is moving toward a more raw diet. We can get acquainted at Linda's potluck if you are coming. Ron Koenig Bellevue, WA RawSeattle , Amy <bookarma> wrote: > Greetings. I'm a long-time vegan; interested in health, fitness & nutrition; who has decided to add more raw foods into my life. I'm not trying to be 100% raw, but definitely would like to be more raw. I have a juicer & recently bought a dehydrator, so I have some of the tools. I used to sprout quite a bit & am starting to get back into it. Question: Has anyone used the Freshlife automatic sprouter? I'm thinking of buying one, but first want to know people's experiences with it. I've heard that in some cases manual sprouting can yield better results than automatic sprouting. Any thoughts on that? I look forward to meeting folks in the group. :-) ~Amy > > > > > The New Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo.

I have met many people who grew up with vegetarian parents, and unfortunately, most have developed an adverse reaction to it. I've heard stories about being unable to eat tofu because their parents made them finish their tofu before leaving the dinnder table. My opinion is that children should be free to choose what they eat and how much they eat, but educated on nutrition. The most important thing they will take with them is the parents' attitudes towards food, and the power of example of healthy eating and healthy eating attitudes. I am a person who is in recovery from eating disorders, so perhaps I am seeing this differently than most people would.
Guest guest
that's true, but at the same time, you would probably raise them vegan to the point where they were of an age where other choices would even be available to them...right? Guest guest
---> Hi all - My name is Joanne, I am from Omaha, NE (If any of you are > from my area, let me know). I've been a vegetarian for many years, > but have recently changed to a 'total vegetarian' (no dairy either). > I have 3 kids ages 6, 8 & 10 who have almost the same diet as I do. I > have a husband who thinks I'm nuts for eating this way (that's where > the kids " almost " comes in); however he does eat what I cook. > > Welcome! I have found this group to be very supportive with this subject. I understand your dilema. I have a seven month old, who my husband and I are planning to raise vegan. We have heard it all. When I was pregnant, people (even strangers!) would comment that I was not " eating well for my baby " . She turned out very healthy, and is in the 95th percentile for her age. She is almost walking already, and is as alert as can be. I am in Portland, Oregon which, fortunatly, has a huge vegan/ vegetarian population. I have been able to find several other like minded parents. However, my family is from the mid-west and is totally unsupportive. My mother thinks its a rite-of-passage to go to McDonalds. They all enjoy hunting and recently bought a pig to send the slaughter house. I've learned that the best way to approach the subject with those that don't understand is to be very confident in what you say. People often times attack what the don't understand. Let them know that while they might think its silly, its what you think is best for your children. Now that your children are older, they might begin to make the choices themselves. I'm hoping that my daughter will be educated and compassionate enought to decide whats best. I plan on letting her know where meat and dairy come from. When she's old enough, she might make the decision to eat differently. That's her choice, but I want her to be aware of why shes making that choice. I'm not sure if any of this helps, but please know that you are doing your children a service in the long run. The will be more aware and compassionate as a result, even if they do choose to do differently than you. You are also educating other people to thinking that is different than the mainstream. Let me know if you would like to discuss anything further. Marisa
Guest guest
Thanks to all for your kind words about raising vegan kids. I do agree that the best I can do is educate them and be a great example - from there it is up to them. I also agree that forcing it upon them will only cause negative feelings & rejection -- that's obviously not what I want! I am much more prepared now to talk to people who question my ways. And, I am sure it will be easier with time. Who knows, maybe I will convert someone who questions me? ) Joanne in Omaha NE Exclusive Video Premiere - Britney Spears http://launch./promos/britneyspears/
Guest guest
I’m a new member too. And I’m not a vegan, or even a “real” vegetarian…...yet. For many years I’ve cut out as many animal products as possible from my diet, and I definitely would be a vegan if not long time married to someone who fights it all the way. (Mostly because of the two girls I’m going to tell you about below). ;-) Eight or nine years ago, my granddaughters.. (two sisters) read “Diet for a New America” by John Robbins, and became “rabid” animal rights advocates and vegans. They were around 10 and 11. Their parents were not vegetarians, but supported them thinking it was something that would go away in a while… The girls are still vegans, and their parents are, like me, “mostly vegetarian” because of the girls’ assertiveness and convictions. It was hard on my daughter, because their teachers were not supportive, their pediatrician was not supportive, and my daughter was constantly defending their choice, and their diet. “What! No milk?” “They’re going to have growth difficulties and osteoporosis.” She and I had to do a lot of research to counteract all of this negativity, and the best part is that we also changed our diet because of what we learned. What amazes me is that the girls’ choice is accepted by most of their peers. After the first little while they quit trying to convert everyone to the diet and animal rights issues, and that helped a lot when they got into middle and high school. Then they were very careful to bring their own food to sleepovers, parties and etc., and not make any waves about why they were eating differently. They said that most of the time no one noticed because there was usually something that they could put on their plate at a friends house. I’m sure it helped a lot that they never discussed their choices unless asked by friends or the friends’ parents. I raised six children unaware of the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle, and I really regret that this information was not available to me then. As an experienced mother and grandmother, my advice would be to give them choices, support those choices as much as you can, and continue to give them a good example at home. I do know that peers are hard on children who are conceived to be “different” if it is not fully supported by the child’s own convictions. I agree that they will resent you, and make other choices when away from you if they are forced. Joanne, you sound like a great Mom! Those are some lucky kids. Guest guest
Hi Monica, I am also nursing an eight month-old while engaging in the live food challenge. Things are great. Round up your recipes and get ready for Monday. It gets easier every day. Shayla
Guest guest
Welcome Monica! There are several nursing moms (including myself) who are doing the 21 days. Our good friend and 'astrologer extraordinaire, DjenneBa, says that if you haven't started the 21 days already that this Monday the 19th is an excellent start date. The new moon is Monday and very auspicious for planting new things (including projects, ideas) and tilling the soil on those old habits. :-) My 8.5 month old is not eating foods as yet so she relies on me for milk. My milk supply has been great and she's looking as solid as ever with me eating all live foods. ~Sunyatta zionismyjoy [zionismyjoy] Thursday, April 15, 2004 6:50 PM Subject: new member intro Greetings,I'm so honored to have been invited to join the raw food journey. I'm still nursing a child so I will not be able to do a completely liquid fast, but I'm looking forward to joining the 21-day raw foods diet. My weaning ceremony will include a 21-day fast. Guest guest
OK, not sure if I was clear.... we nursing moms ARE eating! We are eating live foods though. :-) And after that food the Denzel hooked up yesterday...ummm umm ummm! The greens, nutloaf, 'Triple Soul Dressing'. And the live cheesecake with raspberry compote and chocolate syrup was off the hook! It left me feeling no jones this morning for my shredded wheat cereal and rice milk. ~Sunyatta dr. sunyatta amen [dr.sunyatta] Friday, April 16, 2004 8:15 AM Subject: RE: new member intro Welcome Monica! Guest guest
Monday the 19th it is.....I begin the journey. I've already replaced my morning breakfast with an antioxidant shake and I amazed at how long it is before I am hungry again. It seems when my "cells" are fed I don't get hungry. Monica Z. Guest guest
Hello my name is Tina. I will be 38 on the 9th. I am a mother of 5 children ranging in age from 7 months to 18 years. I am also grandmother to a one year old and have a second grandchild on the way. My husband and I made a promise to one another that we would make lifestyle changes to improve and maintain our health. We started working out and eating healthier. I started researching and reading all that I could including a book called The China Study and have decided that I would like to become a vegatarian within 6 months and Vegan within a year. Thank you allowing me to join your group. I look forward to learning and growing with you. Tina

Guest guest
Welcome to our group, Tina! I'm so pleased that you are thinking of becoming vegetarian - but if you really do want to change I would like to place a small bet (a recipe?) with you that you'll do it in far less than six months! Becoming veggie is _easy_ I assure you! LOL You just have to stop eating the me*t (of all kinds)! Still, to each her own and her own speed. Good luck. As for becoming vegan, that's recognized now as the healthy way to go as well as the best option for the animals I've been vegan since just after the turn of this last century (and veg for a couple of decades before that), so I know it works. Meanwhile, I have to add that we ask of all non-veg members that they remember not to discuss non-veg matters on the list, including non-veg recipes and/or menu items. Okay? _The China Study_ is a great book - we have it on our shelves here at home too! Write in often - it'll be good to see your progress.
