Guest guest
Especially being new to this list, I'm going to try extra hard to respect the dominant culture here. But let me respectfully offer that I think it's a shame that both 'florkle' and 'bruno' were asked to leave. I thought they were both kinda bozo, but too it's refreshing to have a mix of perspectives. But on the other hand, I have an exceptionally high tolerance for eccentrics (being a little of one myself Bruce

Just for the record, Chris and I are the only official List Admins for SFBAVeg. We did not ask " Florkle " or " Bruno " to leave. Personally, I think conversations about appropriate behavior, asking someone to leave or tone it down, or whatever, should be accepted as a natural part of community communication. I do think, however, that it works much better when those suggestions and criticisms are made to the community rather than privately, this helps avoid misunderstandings. But I know that many are simply concerned that those type of discussions disrupt the pleasant tone of the list. The best solution I've seen is a sub list, SFBAVegAdmin or somesuch, where policy discussions, arguments, flames, discipline, comments, suggestions, etc. happen more or less freely. This allows everyone who wants to, to keep up on community politics by subscribing to it, or just checking in on that archive when something comes up. The beauty of the scheme thought is that if someone doesn't ever want to hear flak or strife of any kind, they can only to the main list and have it more or less exactly the way they want without anyone having to police it (very much; someone still might have to periodically guide strident discussions to the other list). Lastly and most importantly I think, this is a quotidian issue on all the lists I have belonged to; I wanted to address it in passing but was not trying to make a big deal out of it, I'm sorry if I contributed to that. And in that same regard I realize that my suggestion may be overly complicated; just meant as food for thought. Thanks, Bruce

Guest guest
Yes, we also do prefer than discussion/comments of how the list is managed should go to _owner rather than to the whole group Then it is of course handled off-list. Thanks for mentioning that. No need to give up eggs and dairy to become vegetarian - that does seem a bit daunting for some folk unless they have a very strong motivation to change in that way. That's more a vegan thing. As getting rid of meat (all animals) in the diet, some people find it easier to give up one kind of meat at a time rather than the whole lot at once; others of course say cold 'tofurkey' works best. What matters is that it should work for you - and, of course, that you should ultimately give it up Best of luck with that. Guest guest
I have a really hard time believing that these hate emails are actually happening. I have never gotten one from any list I have ever been on. I think mentioning getting them is more of an attempt to demonize a group or someone looking for attention. It is very popular to demonize and attack people who happen to be environmentalists or animal rights people. In fact it has become a sport for many to do so. Some will do anything to make us greenies, animal folks into something we are not. There may very well be a growing list of folks becoming vegetarian for health reasons, and while that also helps alleviate the real life suffering of farm animals the overwhelmingly majority of vegetarians are so for ethical conscience reasons and that is to do away with the inhumane treatment of helpless animals.
