Guest guest
sorry...have to disagree i think their is confusion with staple and "only" potatoes are a staple dish in the US, along with wheat, corn..does that mean, one only eats wheat? one only eats corn? no, it just means they form a large basis for the diet if you only ate potaotes, well, all i gotta say is, hope you have a computer that can speak, or you know braille, cuz you couldn't type anymore. potatoes don't have vitamin A....you'd go blind which explains why many people who use lotsa potatoes also add cabbage.... its all about balance Raptor1000 Jun 7, 2007 11:40 AM Re: Re: politics In my opinion it is possible to live entirely on potatoes. Most people do not , but probably could if they had to.The Irish did a pretty good job of it .Actually the Irish population increased several times after the introduction of the potato. Some years ago I did some research on the Irish diet and found the main diet during that period was a food called stir about. It consisted of a bunch of potatoes and a head of cabbage thrown into a large metal pot in the fireplace. The food was stirred with a big stick and was called stir about. The farm hands would scoop out a handful . The typical farm hand would consume 8 pounds of potatoes a day. Work hard and stay healthy. In New Guinea the natives live almost entirely on Yams.In Peru potatoes are the main staple food.In Russia potatoes and cabbage are the standard staple.Bear in mind that potatoes have less than 1% fat and yet the folks that consume them do not have any shortage of fat in their diet.We do not require more than 1% fat to be healthy. Also we require less than 300 mg of sodium per day. The potato has enough.Richfraggle wrote:>> i would think its impossible to LIVE entirely off of potaotes for an > extended period of time..at least healthily....eventually you'd suffer > severe defiencies.> they could be a major part of a diet...but...not the entire diet...> > sorry..earthlink not letting me to snip my responses>>> > metalscarab> Jun 7, 2007 7:19 AM> > Re: Re: politics>> Hi Rich>> Please could you cite some actual examples of this... preferably> ones which> have been authenticated by scientific study.>> I absolutely love potatoes, but I really don't think I would be at all> healthy if I attempted to live on nothing but them... no iron, a> lack of> most of the major vitamins, chocked full of carbs, virtually no> useful fat> content, low in protein, low in calcium...>> BB> Peter>> -> "Raptor1000" <raptor1000 (AT) comcast (DOT) net> <raptor1000%40comcast.net>>> < <%40>>> Wednesday, June 06, 2007 2:58 PM> Re: Re: politics>> > The point is that humans can and do live on a diet of only> potatoes, and> > that potatoes have less than 1% fat.> > Rich> > heartwerk wrote:> > >> > > I love potatoes - what point are you trying to make in regard> to fat?> > >> > > Jo> > >> > > > <%40>> > > <%40>, Raptor1000 <raptor1000> wrote:> > > >> > > > http://www.all-creatures.org/mfz/health-potatoes.html> <http://www.all-creatures.org/mfz/health-potatoes.html>> > > <http://www.all-creatures.org/mfz/health-potatoes.html> <http://www.all-creatures.org/mfz/health-potatoes.html>>> > > >> > > > Oom Yaaqub wrote:> > > > >> > > > > [[There are no healthy fats.]]> > > > >> > > > > That statement is absolutely untrue. Guest guest
hi folks. going to an early barbecue on saturday. i'm tasked with the meatless entree (going with tofurky dogs i think...easy) but also the potato salad. not to step on anyone's toes, but i just don't like the stuff, primarily the mayo. does anyone have a substitute picnic starchy potatoesque salad that those used to fried chicken, baked beans and potato salad might enjoy? a long shot, but what the heck. thanks, kate

Slice the potatoes and boil until reasonably close to done. (Takes some trial and error to learn just how far to go). Cut the onions into slices, separate into rings, and fry until translucent in your choice of oil (I use olive oil). Layer the potatoes on the onions and add pepper. Repeat until all potatoes are used. Let fry until brown. Stir very gently from time to time so as not to break the potato slices. About the only problem with this is that it is best served warm. At least, with my cooking, if you let it get cold, it loses a lot. Eric
