Guest guest
Thanks, Paula - I couldn't find the Old Bay Seasoning in the places I looked, but I'm heading for the supermarket today for something else and will see if it's there. I know you can find recipes for it (and so many other commercial seasoning mixes) on the web and I'll do that if I don't find it easily. Worth a try though! I'm not looking for commercially made faux f*sh (or faux shr*mp) - I've seen those, I think at Loblaws some years back. I'm looking to make it myself - it's the _recipe_ for doing that I'm looking for. I've tasted the commercial stuff in restaurants, and some is excellent. As for the faux shr*mp, your dh is right - good replica (I think - it's been years and years but it might have been the last of the animal flesh things to go out of my diet way back when so closest in my memory). I like trying to make these things myself - love faux be*f and faux t*rkey I make at home and think it's time to move on to other things!!! So exciting being vegan! I'll look at the veggieparadise.com website to see what it's all about. Thanks for all the help!!! Best, Pat
Guest guest
It is possible that Old Bay Seasoning is something that is not easily found in Canada, but easier to find here in the US. I can't find date syrup down here and I could find it up there. There may be some other brand of " crab and shrimp " * seasoning up there. This entry in Wikepedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Bay_Seasoning, says it contains celery seed <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celery_seed> , bay leaf <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_leaf> , mustard <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustard_seed> seed, both black <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pepper> and red pepper <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum> , cinnamon <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinnamon> , and ginger <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger> . You can also get it online at http://www.marylanddelivered.com/oldbay.htm. *just to mention the typical use, even though we use it to make fake seafood dishes ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. ~.~ (my signature) from Maida Please sign the petition to allow pets, link in upper left at www.petsincondos.org Get <http://visitor.constantcontact.com/manage/optin/ea?v=0019nHHvdGXir6TSuAPIxL sSw%3D%3D> e-mail updates Check out our PSA at http://www.youtube.com/AllowPetsInCondos
Guest guest
You're welcome. Good luck with the search for Old Bay. If I see it in another store I'll let you know. I am glad the faux shr*mp is a good replica. My DH is an omni and the more substitutes I can get him to use the better. I look forward to hearing how the faux f*sh turns out (if you manage to find a recipe). Good luck with the search (and I'll keep looking too). Guest guest
Thanks, John. No I haven't tried this (or similar) yet because I was hoping someone here would have already test-driven such a recipe and would post it. But no reason to avoid the untried. This recipe is simple enough - and I always have gluten powder/flour in the house. I'll let you all know how it turns out! Guest guest
Thanks, Paula. I'm going to try the seitan version soon. My dh is vegan, but my ds is omni and he will be the main audience for whatever I cook up when he comes to visit in a couple of weeks. He is usually very patient with our 'beliefs' as he refers to our decision not to eat non-human animals (we don't eat humans either - is that a belief system too?) and therefore with what he gets fed at our table. I usually do something spicy (well, of course!) and asian to please him (and us, of course) but I thought I'd add the extra little thing of vegan f*sh this time Ya never know, something like that just might sway someone to thinking that being veg or vegan isn't all that bad after all! I'll check back with you all when I've tried the recipe - I'll probably use the one John gave us the link to. Best, Pat > I am glad the faux shr*mp is a good replica.
