Pat, you shamed me into it! I've been meaning to post more. I can't explain

what the problem is. I guess it's just quicker to read briefly and then go on

to something else without responding or initiating anything. But really, this

is my only opportunity to relate to kindred souls (my real life experiences

haven't gone well with vegetarians---that will need to be its own separate

post), so I need to actively take advantage of it.

1. I'm a vegetarian who eats dairy. I'm a wannabe vegan, but it's too

difficult with an omnivore husband. I'll eat eggs that are in something like a

cake mix, but not on their own.

2. I started out being a vegetarian due to both health reasons and to avoid

animal cruelty/killing of animals on my behalf.

3. I cook vegetarian food for myself and my husband, who as I said is an

omnivore but is happy to eat vegetarian at home (occasionally he supplements it

with a piece of fish).

4. I don't buy that many prepared foods, but I do read labels carefully. Years

ago, I was craving Oreo cookies but wouldn't buy them because of the lard.

Finally they got the lard out, so it was okay for me to eat them, but what a

let-down! I don't know if the lard was totally responsible for the taste I

remembered enjoying as a kid, but I found it pretty tasteless. I avoid gelatin

and any type of meat broth in what I eat (not easy to explain in a Mexican

restaurant in terms of the beef and rice!).

5. Yup, I confess. Although I avoid gelatin in yogurt, I do take supplements

with gel caps. I met a vegan who insisted she removed the gel covering of

pills---that doesn't seem wise, especially with a prescription medicine, since

you would be removing some of the actual medication and not just the gel

covering.

6. Not looking for any recipes in particular---have so many already. I would

love to share some of my recipes if anyone is interested. I like vegan dishes,

an occasional old school vegetarian dish, and Mediterasian food (Mediterranean

or Asian).

7. The hotter the better! It's the only area that I'm not a wimp in. I can

take it very spicy. I order food " Thai Hot. " Love spicy Indian, Thai, and

Sichuan, Mexican, jerk seasoning. Love Sichuan peppercorns!

8. I to Vegetarian Times. I lurk on Post Punk Kitchen.

9. I'd love to chat with like-minded people who don't pity me or think I'm

weird for not including animal products in my diet.

10. Waaaaay over 40. I'm 55. At vegetarian Meetups (especially vegan

Meetups), I'm always the oldest one!

I live in metro Atlanta, Georgia, US. I retired early from health/human

services. Married, no kids. I do have a furkid: a 25 pound, 16 year old orange

and white tabby (my first cat. I thought I was exclusively a dog person). I

could be persuaded to post his photo! I love cooking, walking/hiking, water

aerobics, reading, foreign and independent films, jazz, classical, blues, and

rock music.

So---am I out of the doghouse now that I have de-lurked? :)

Hello everyone,

It's been a long time since I posted here, but I'm still reading, just quietly.

My favorite kind of bread to make myself is an apple sour cream quick bread (you

can use vegan sour cream). Naming a favorite kind to eat is tougher - I like

many kinds, from flat breads such as naan to multigrain loaves.

I just attended a vegan winter desserts cooking class last weekend, and it was

heaps of fun. The recipes are the teacher's own, so I don't think I'd feel

comfortable posting them here, though, unfortunately for you all. I'll share

the biggest trick I learned in the class - making a vegan pie crust, it helps to

have the ingredients be cold. We used oil that had been in the freezer instead

of using vegan margarine and it worked really, really well - I'm pretty sure it

was the best pie crust I've ever made. Add the oil slowly (a bit at a time),

blending as you go, so that it beads up in the flour. The finished crust should

look marbled - that's normal.

and we will know you're still reading stuff on Vegetarian Spice! Okay? Here goes

(and it's an easy one):
