Hi Becdee.

You just wrote in response to our Questionnaire that you like Mexican-style

dishes but think they might be impossible for a vegan diet. I'm here to tell

you: Not at all!!! There are good vegan cheeses, made of rice, soy or nuts (some

recipes for making these at home exist in our Files section in the Faux Foods

folder) and vegan sour cream is available in most places. Mexican dishes, as

others, are filed in our Files section according to their major ingredient if

they are main course or side dishes. Also, have a look lower down at the folder

for sandwiches, wraps, tortillas etc., and you'll find more Mexican recipes. We

have Mexican recipes galore (this is after all a hot-and-spicy group!)

*including* vegan recipes. If you have trouble, just ask :)

And enjoy the group!!!!

Best, Pat

THE QUESTIONS (and there are no right or wrong answers here!):

1. Which description BEST fits your situation?

- I am a vegetarian who eats both eggs and dairy (Lacto-ovo-vegetarian) I have

been doing this for years

.. . .

- I am a vegan who eats no eggs, dairy or (usually) no honey This is what I wish

to become

2. What are your reasons for choosing a vegetarian way of life? These might be

- Concern for the environment

- Religious, spiritual and/or philosophical reasons

- Dislike of the taste of non-vegetarian food

- World economy

- Personal economy

(Please place an X against the ones which apply)

Which one is your MAIN reason? Cardiiolist recommended and sounds good to me if

I can find enough info. recipes, etc.

3. Do you cook vegetarian food yourself only or also for others in your

household? What about the non-vegetarians in your household? mostly me

4. Do you find it difficult to ensure no hidden animal ingredients are present

in prepared foods or packaged foods you buy in a store and/or in food you eat in

a restaurant or the home of friends and family? yes

not yet

kinds of food do you enjoy? yes mexican would love something simliar only

vegan-may be impossible

8. Do you find you read a lot about vegetarian topics (in books, magazines, on

the web)? just starting to

9. What is your MAIN reason for deciding to be part of our group? (eg. access to

vegetarian recipes, information about vegetarianism, support for your vegetarian

decision, chatting with like-minded people, other.) sounds like it would have

some good recipes and ideas

AND NOW Is there anything else you would like to tell us (such as your country

indoor and outdoor sports, etc.)? Let's hear it! Mountain West- many meat eaters

and hunters here very little support

Hi Pat,

Where do you buy vegan sour cream? I've never seen it. I just bought the tofutti

cream cheese (haven't tried it yet).

I am working toward going vegan. I am currently 90% there. It's pizza that will

be the hardest for me.

I buy vegan sour cream at the same place as the vegan cream cheese etc., usually

right next to it. Tufutti makes it. Both are good.

Well, some vegan cheeses melt so you can use them for pizza if you make your

own. If you do take-away pizza, remember you can ask for it without cheese. I

know it sounds weird, but after a couple of times you wonder why you ever wanted

to hide the taste of the pizza toppings under all that cheese! I like chopped

olives, chopped jalapenos and/or artichoke hearts on mine for added flavour.

Spoiled.

Good luck!

Best, Pat

Our Sobey's just started carrying the Tofutti cream cheese and Earth Balance

Margarine. I haven't seen the sour cream but I'll look. I can also hit the Big

Carrot or one of the other health food stores here.

I hope you're right about the pizza! I also have omni-DH to deal with (he

already thinks I'm weird).

Thanks!

Paula
