One  small correction; Dr. Atkins didn't die of a heart attack, he died from

slipping  and falling on ice and hitting his head.

Health Matters: Study re low-carb diets

" vegetariansincanada " <vegetariansincanada >, " vegetarian

I know that 'high protein' diets are pretty well incompatible with the vegan way

- although I do know some who have tried it - there can still be an attempt to

keep the carbs low with some who want to lose weight. I thought this might help

us all to rationalize eating sensibly :-)  (I say this as one who, back in the

bad old days back in the 70s wayyyy before I became vegetarian and then vegan, I

was very strictly low-carb as promoted by

that-doctor-who-promoted-high-protein-and-died-of-a-heart-attack's diet.)

Anyway, even if it doesn't apply to you personally, save the link for giving to

friends and loved ones, okay? Here it is:

I refer to low-carb diets as death diets.

I never did understand how people can disregard what has

been reasonably clear for many years. Wishful thinking, I

suppose.

From the link:

Now, a study led by team of Harvard researchers at

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)

provides some of the first data on this subject,

demonstrating that mice placed on a 12-week

low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet showed a

significant increase in atherosclerosis, a buildup

of plaque in the heart’s arteries and a leading

cause of heart attack and stroke. The findings also

showed that the diet led to an impaired ability to

form new blood vessels in tissues deprived of blood

flow, as might occur during a heart attack.

Not at all surprising. As far as I'm concerned, a low-carb

diet is strictly for those who consider appearances to be

of far greater importance than health. The diets are

anything but healthy.

Thanks for the correction - from a couple of you, actually. My bad. I know there

is quite a bit of controversy surrounding Dr Atkins death and even over what

weight he actually was when he died and, if the higher weight some say, what the

reason was for the sudden increase. I should have left the cause of his death

well alone.

Another veggy list refused to publish the info.  Said I was lying!

I can't imagine about what - it's all true. I was trying to be helpful. I have

more respect for you.

I'm on my 2nd day of http://www.oilpulling.org/faq.htm

Not sure it's a correction, just another version of what happened, ya know?

Somehow I feel we'll never really know.

Here is my opinion on this issue, people are not one size fits all and just

because a specific diet works well with a large number of people doesnt mean

they are right everyone.   AS to low carb/high protein, you can do that on a

vegan/veggie diet by using veggies such as avocado's.

discovering his or her own true nature and developing it fully, in harmony with

the outer world.
