Kids' Halloween Party ideas?

Rate this topic

I've been asked for ideas for really yucky food (horror movie style) for a kids'

party. Refusing to take this as an omni comment on veg cuisine ;) I'm putting a

little thought to it beyond the examples given of 'black' spaghetti and blue

potatoes. So far I'm drawing a blank except for a truly disgusting idea for a

sundae which must be (sub) conscious aggression against the inquirer for which I

am thoroughly ashamed.

Those of you with kids under the age of 50, do you have any ideas? I'm clearly

outta touch!

Marilu Henner had some great ideas in her book Healthy Holidays.  I was just

looking at it this weekend for Thanksgiving ideas.

hmm, I don't know if gummy worms are veg friendly (mostly cause I don't like

them anyways) but ice cream sundae with blood (strawberry sauce) and maggots

(gummy worms) with chips of bone (nuts) if they like.. I don't know if that is

along the right lines or not but I am thinking still...

Thanks, Angela. I don't know that book - I'll check online to see if our library

has it (saving both trees and money) though it'll probably be loaned out this

time of year.

Hi Jenn,

Generally speaking, gummy bears and gummy worms aren't veg friendly cuz they're

made from gelatin usually (although I believe health stores might now have them

made from non-animal gelatin?) but the family we're talking about is omni not

veg and kids love those kinds of things usually. It's a clever idea for a sundae

- easy to shop for and quick to put together. Good thought. Thanks a bunch. More

more more!!!

OK, since you brought up gelatin, this one's a classic

from Penn and Teller. I tried to find a video of it

to no avail, so you'll have to use your imagination:

Funny! Absolutely gross, of course, and even grosser when one thinks of the

Jell-o. Hey, what IS the brand name of a vegan version of, well, vegetarian

jello or jelly?

Some people really take Hallowe'en seriously - somehow I never quite got into it

but perhaps in my dotage I might learn to have more fun, eh? LOL

Thanks for the smile, Erin.

Just what I was wondering - although I'm told that agar-agar is easy to use, if

a bit pricey for the initial purchase of a package of it.

Can anyone help?

Re: agar-agar, here's how you'd use it to make a vegan jello:

I've not tried this yet. Think I might now. I actually bought

a couple packages from http://zenpawn.com/links/miraclenoodles

a while back (one red, one plain), but they remain unopened.

My son had a unit at school called " Yucky Cooking, " and he came home with some

truly vile (but tasty) treats. One was baby poop cookies, which were simply

no-bake oatmeal cookies with green food coloring added to make them the color of

their namesake. Also, band-aids. These were graham crackers with marshmallow

and red decorator gel. Both are dessert items. I don't really know of any meal

items. I also saw a cute thing done with a clear disposable glove. Put candy

corn at the tip of each finger and fill the rest of the glove with caramel corn.

Tie the end with a twist-tie. It looks like a monster hand. Good luck!

Now some of those look wild enough to suit anyone! I'm saving all of these -

yours and the others!

Thanks very much (and thanks to your ds too).

I found these on a Living on a Dime e-newsletter (I made some vegan/vegetarian

adjustments):

Brains - Scramble eggs/tofu with some green, yellow and blue food coloring

Bloody Eyeballs - Boil cherry tomatoes 30 seconds. Allow to cool; then peel

skin.

Goblin Hand - Freeze green Kool-Aid in a rubber or latex glove, float in punch.

Edible Slime - Pour lime " jello " (agar-agar) into a glass bowl. After it is

partially set, add gummy worms. Chill until lightly set. Then serve slopped all

over the plate.

Bloody Popcorn - Add red food color to melted butter/margarine and pour over

popcorn.

Freeze gummy worms in ice cubes and add them to drinks. Cut gummy worms in half

if needed.

Hain makes one, but I never see it anywhere and it's really good because it's

made with fruit juice.

Yes, agar agar is very pricey which is why I didn't buy it (as I recall) when I

saw it some time ago and haven't looked since. We rarely have desserts except

for fruit, and although I was intrigued by what seemed to be an excellent recipe

using it I thought the dollars it would cost for the agar agar alone (and which

might never be used again in our household) suggested giving it a miss.

I think though that very little is needed in each recipe, and I suspect that

households which have to cater to sundry tastes, if only now and then, might

find the initial cost worthwhile rather than risk disappointing people by not

being able to provide a dessert that would please on, say, a holiday occasion.

Of course there are plenty of desserts that do not require a 'jello' substitute

aren't there! LOL I guess if there is some in the house then a dish of green

slime for a _special_ Hallowe'en party might be worthwhile ;)
