Hi,  My name is Carol

I am new to the group .

Thanks for having me.

I would like some ideas on healthy snacks.

I am a new veggie

I wanted something to carry with me that won't go bad

or need to stay cold.

My daughter has therpies on Saturdays and I need something

healthy to take along because it is from 11-2pm .

Which means Lunch time.

I am trying to stay away from fast food right now.

As I am making some life changes as far as my diet

is concerned and really don't want to tempt my self

be doing so.

I have looked around to see if there were maybe some

kind of salad bar type things close by.

Subway was the only thing I saw.  other than going to HEB.

Thanks    Carol

Hi Carol!  I'm going to suggest some old standbys first...baby carrots, raisins,

maybe peanut butter and celery (although it's kind of messy).

If you're ovo-lacto, string cheese is a good choice, too.  Don't be afraid to

keep it unrefrigerated, as cheese is better at room temp anyway.  I'm vegan now

and don't eat it anymore, but when I ate cheese, it was great to keep in my

purse.

Nuts are great for protein and healthy fats.  We women should be eating more

almonds!

If you're not too scared of processed foods, Stonewall's Jerquee is awesome!

It's a bit high in fat (9 grams or so), but it's sold in a little package that

fits in a purse easily and it tastes great.  It just might be my favorite

vegetarian must-have item.  Hopefully your health food store carries it, or you

can order it online from various vegetarian stores.

Finally, Subway's Veggie Delight sandwich is delicious (with or without cheese,

depending on whether you're vegan or ovo-lacto).  I get it with every veggie

(LOTS of banana peppers and jalapenos!) and the Sweet Onion Sauce, which is

fat-free.  YUM!

Hope this helps!

AKM

Hi Carol, and Welcome!

Many times, I go out for several hours in search of garage and estate sales,

and auctions. I always take snacks and food with me, as my companion isn't

veggie and just loves the junk food available. So I'm on my own....!

I'll take along a container of veggies, some crunchy crackers or pretzels,

or nuts. Protein and nuts bars are good. You could also try some granola,

either purchased or make your own to control exactly what goes into it. A

thermos of hot soup is always nice.

Even making your own veggie sub sandwich is cheaper and better than what you

can buy. If you haven't tried some of the great faux " lunch meats " , they

make some really great sandwiches.

In the hot weather, I take a small soft-sided thermal pack with me. Helps

keep the veggies fresh. Even so, I doubt that anything would get really bad

in just a few hours.

I'm sure lots more people will chime in with some of their favorites!
