Wow, that is something to think about!  I had never thought about pets much,

especially now that I am older and my kids are grown and on their own!

Oh but the poll is about NON-domestic animals, and 'pets' would be domestic,

so-called, along with other domesticated non-human animals such as cows,

turkeys, blah blah blah

 

But I hear you - and indeed many vegetarians think that we ought not to keep

'pets' because that's not in the interests of the animals. Others think it's

okay as long as they are animals which have been long domesticated by humans and

would not be able to survive without us. Others are somewhere in there but think

it's best if we acquire companion animals ye rescue rather than by breeding or

purchase.
