Guest guest
Today 3rd December Paul McCartney, former Beatle and long-term vegetarian, will address the plenary chamber of the European Parliament on the subject " Less Meat = Less Heat " . He will stress the link between meat-eating and global warming and make a plea for one meatless day every week. Piers
Guest guest
This is such a good step for countries - the world - to take. Sir Paul made the plea (in this context) for global warming's link to eating meat (i.e. animal flesh); the same 'meatless day' would also assist towards eradicating world hunger, a host of problems which plague the overfed west (and increasingly parts of the east), and the plight of non-human animals. Whew, soapbox height is making me feel kinda dizzy at this hour of the morning - time to dismount But seriously, folks . . . . Anyway, it's nice to know that probably all of us here, including the omnivores among our members, have already taken that good step on a personal level. 'Meat-out Mondays'? Sure! Good post, Piers. Guest guest
Thanks and thanks for reminding me that I forgot to endow Sir Paul with his rightful prefix - clearly I was a Beatle fan before he was granted this royal distinction! Reactions at least in the Netherlands were predictably mixed - there were those who, aside from the content of the message, felt it inappropriate that the august hall of the plenary assembly of the European Parliament should be dedicated to such a specific plea - especially when a spiritual leader such as the Dalai Lama was recently refused this platform and was ushered out by a back door for fear of upsetting his Chinese neighbours. But the general impression seems to be that vegetarianism along with other attributes of healthy life style should be encouraged even by those who themselves aren't 100% compliant. Guest guest
Didn't intend to remind - wasn't thinking. And yup, we both predate the Beatles by some considerable time ;-) I was all grown up and there they were looking like scrubbed little boys in tight suits and pudding-basin haircuts (only not quite). I was a fan from the word go. Still am. As for the suitability of the forum for Sir P's plea, I figure any reasonable chance to pass on the good word about Vegetarianism is not to be missed. As for the Dalai Lama, he tried to make his chance to speak in the same forum but was, sadly, refused; that's no reason to exclude all others as well. I think the Dutch opinion is a wise and practical one there.
