HAPPY NEW YEAR and kouseband

Thank you Pat for your new year greeting, I'd like to add to those wishes - a

happy new year to all members, health, contentment and lovely vegetarian food!

We didn't celebrate New Year as such but on the 2nd we had a house-warming party

for the family as we'd moved back into our former residence which had been let

out, and wanted to welcome everyone and show we were " up and running " in the new

abode - quite literally a house-warming as the heating system hadn't quite

caught up with a sudden drop in temperature, having been kept on a low ebb

during the vacancy!

Of course there were dishes to suit all tastes, among the vegetarian ones was

one using kouseband, that's a kind of very long stringy bean used a lot in

Suriname and Indonesian cookery ( " kouseband " is the Dutch word for " garter " ).

Not knowing quite what to do with it I made an adaptation of my usual stir fry

and it was very successful, so much so that the omnivores enjoyed it too! I'll

post a recipe as soon as I've got the quantities sorted out, but meanwhile if

anyone is familiar with this ingredient I'd be interested to hear of their

experience.

Best, Piers

quiet or not so quiet according to your choice :) Ours will be sedate, as befits

our elderly status, with dinner at eight (no, not the old movie!) in a nearby

restaurant followed by a quiet evening at home while the world lets off

fireworks and all the rest of it.

Glad your housewarming went well, Piers - and hope the heating system has caught

up by now. That lovely Kouseband With Tempeh dish should have helped a lot!

Searching on the net, I realize I know this vegetable as Chinese Long Bean (hey,

most suitable for a New Year feast!) and have had it as something else in

Malaysia with lots of chilies. It's delicate and lovely. I haven't seen it in

the shops here recently, but I shall look out for it as soon as the start

bringing good veg edibles back as the year wears on.

Thanks for the recipe too, which I see just posted. I see you haven't filed it,

no doubt bewildered as to where it belongs in the new system. So I have edited

the description of the first folder Beans, Lentils, Dried Peas, Etc. to indicate

that recipes there refer to the _dried_ versions of legumes and have added to

the description of Fruit Vegetables to indicate that fresh legumes (green beans,

fresh peas and the like) are included there.

For those of you who want to know the theory behind this arbitrary distinction

lol think: go to the fridge for fruit veggies (which include squash, eggplant,

tomatoes and so on); go to the cupboard for the dried ones. Otherwise one folder

got too big!

I must try this way of doing those 'yard-long' beans when I get the chance!

Best,

Pat

Thanks Pat, also for filing the message - I was going to wait for possible

reactions (errors etc.) before filing but I agree there might have been a

problem in finding the correct folder. There was an error btw - I suggested 250

mg of kouseband as being the appropriate quantity but that would have been a

small amount! (maybe confused by all these meds I've been dealing with lately),

so I applied the correction.

And yes the recipe went a second day - I added bean sprouts to the leftovers and

that gave it truly a new lease of life!

Best, Piers
