Guest guest
I'm located just about smack dab mid-mitten. Not too far from Lansing, the motor city as it's called here. There are efforts to get an Earthshave chapter up and running in Ann Arbor, MI. My name is Dorith ( " Doryt " ) and I am a lady of 58 years Twent-five years ago I married a vegetarian, since his birth as both his parents were vegetarians. Since then we have a vegetarian household, but my husband allows me to eat meat outside of the home. However, as long as our three children were young, I did not do it in front of them, because my husband wanted them to stay vegetarian as long as possible, until they would decide for themselves. So sometimes I eat meat, but in fact very seldomly as I do not crave it at all. All three children decided to eat meat, but later on the oldest one (24) returned to vegetarianism. And his girlfriend of more than 2 years is also a vegetarian. We do not live in the US, but I hope I can learn new recipes from you even though certain ingredients may not be available here in Israel. Guest guest
Hi Dorith I love the way you both allowed for your children to make up their own minds. My husband and I have chosen not to have children, but I always said if we did, they would be vegetarian. I would do plenty of research into a suitable children's diet to make sure they had all their nutrients etc. But they would not be discouraged from making their own decision when they grew up. Guest guest
Hi Hannah - welcome to the group. Eggs are produced by hens and to keep the supply of hens going they breed and hatch - all the male chicks are killed at about one day old because they are of no 'use' to us. So, for us to eat eggs it means that millions of little male chicks are deprived of their lives. Good luck with becoming vegan. Anyways, im not going to eat any more eggs until i have as much information on it as possible and until i've made up my mind, so if anyone can help me out with their insights to the mater it would be great. > > > > > test'; " > > > > Moving house? Guest guest
welcome hannah on top of wot Jo said, not only are most of the male chicks killed(by stuffin em in plastic bags to suffocate), but free range really doesn't mean much instead of being crammed in a battery cage, they can be crammed on the floor of a factory/warehouse... free range conjurs up images of chickens happily scratching in the dirt, sun on their backs...sorry, fer the most part thats not the case cheers fraggle
Guest guest
Hannah; Welcome! I hope you find all the information (and opinions) you need here. Jo makes an excellent point. Another point I would make is that " free range " doesn't really have a legal definition of any kind. In general, all it really means is that the animals have access to the outdoors. It could be a bare dirt area 12 " by 12 " and count, so long as it's outdoors. Also, what do you think happens to the hens when they get too old to lay? Chicken soup, here we come. OK, I've probably ranted enough now. Again, welcome. sara , " heartwerk " <Heartwork@b...> wrote: > > Hi Hannah - welcome to the group. > > Eggs are produced by hens and to keep the supply of hens going they > breed and hatch - all the male chicks are killed at about one day old > because they are of no 'use' to us. Guest guest
Hi Hann Welcome to the group I see that other people have already commented on the free range egg issue, so won't go too deeply into it myself - just to extend what Sara said on the free range definition - you'll often find that although the hen coup has a door to allow hens access to the outside, you'll often have thousands of hens in a coup which means that realistically half of them will never get near the door because they have to fight their way through 500 or so other hens who don't want to go out! Guest guest
Hann Free range is often a technical myth and though the chickens are not battery they are not free either but loophole allow the manufactures to put that they are. Also many people who do wat eggs fall into the trap of eating ‘farm fresh’ or similarly sounding freerange terms. Chickens are also kept in 24 hour day light conditions confusing their body’s to lay more eggs In true free range environment I believe (though have known this for many years and cannot remember where I read it) that for each egg you remome the chicken lays another – hence the chicken is stressed at the point of realizing theft has occurred. For me that is reason enough not to eat eggs Oh yeh – and all the males are surplus to requirements and are gassed at one day old and all (??) females are debeaked so they don’t peck eachother through boredom – this is a similar procedure from videos I have seen to opening a beer bottle…nice Andrew Barnes Account Manager FDM Group Lanchester House - Trafalgar Place - Brighton - BN1 4FL Tel: +44 (0)870 060 3100 - Fax: +44 (0)870 060 3101 - Mob: +44 (0)7970 075 905 andrew.barnes www.fdmgroup.com heartwerk [Heartwork] 02 December 2004 19:47 Re: new member Hi Hannah - welcome to the group. Guest guest
thanks to everyone who gave me information on this. I really hadn't even considered what the law classed as free range or what happened to the male chickens. I'm really grateful for all the information, i thought i had cut all animal cruelty out of my diet more than 3 years ago when i became vegeterian, but i guess that i have some more to cut out of my diet. thanks again guys. The folks here have been very helpful to me. I was going to post this list the other day as there was a 16 year old here (sorry, I don't recall the name) who posted about needing easy to prepare things. I pack lunches for my two teenager daughters every day. They take: -tofurkey slices on a whole wheat tortilla, spread with " better than cream cheese " and rolled up. I send a small container of cranberry sauce for them to dip the rolls in. -peanut butter and jelly on whole grain bread - wheat pita with hummus - pasta salad - whole wheat pasta, sliced olives, roasted red pepper, shredded carrot, vegan feta cheese (homemade) - whatever happens to be in the fridge. I use Annie's tuscany italian dressing on it. - rice noodles with peanut sauce and shredded vegetables (carrot, zuchinni) - veggie salami w/toffuti mozzarella slice on a hard roll. - vegetable sushi (storebought) I find if I make their lunch while I'm making dinner it's less of a burden. Amy's has a lot of frozen items that are vegan and aren't awful. They are expensive but less than takeout. Can you plan for leftovers from dinner? Last week I made samosas and the kids took leftovers in their lunch. We were inspired by those and made sort of mini-calzones for dinner one night and again, the leftovers went to school. Hope that gives you some ideas.... nancy

Those are my basic rules ;-) Hey today I had lunch at a new-ish cafe here in Lafayette. It's called Cafe Esperanza - owned by a few local women - they sell organic coffee, sandwiches, soup etc. Every time I've gone in, of the three soups on the menu two have them have been vegan (and promoted as such). It's a pretty cool little place. See, there's hope still for those of us on the other side of the culture-clot tunnel. nancy

Guest guest
HI Charis Welcome to the group. My favourite lunch is bread and hummous - with tomatoes, green leaves, cucumber etc. - whatever salad you like. This also works with gaucamole, and any other bean/lentil pate and different types of bread, i.e. pitta. Slices of cold nut roast are good. You could use slices of vegan cheese with pickle. Guest guest
Hey there, Casey. How old is your daughter? I'm Beth in NYC & my *suddenly!* 8 y.o. daughter has never been very interested in meat, either. Casey <busdrvr259 wrote:Howdy hi y'all! My daughter has expressed an interest in being vegetarian, so thought I would join this group and try some recipes out and share with my daughter. Dress up your holiday email, Hollywood style. Guest guest
They can get all of their protein requirements from other foods. Meat is not essential to a human diet. Check with a nutritionist and if they try to tell you ways to hide the meats in other foods forget it. You child will know. They should give you healthy alternatives like beans, dairy, eggs, and believe it or not there is protein in veggies. You may wish to talk to your doctor about a vitamin B-12 suplement.
