Guest guest
> Pardon me for asking, but why? A combination of a few not very good reasons. Firstly I sometimes hang out on a webboard that has some pretty militant vegans on it, it's as if no one can be vegan enough for them. So that really kinda bummed me out and turned me a lil off to veganism, because up until I found that board I never really conversed with other vegans. Secondly because I just moved from Phoenix to Flagstaff. Phoenix is a *huge* city and Flagstaff is very small. There were quite a few places in Phoenix to get vegan foods/cleaning products/etc.. at very reasonable prices and I just can't find that stuff in Flagstaff. I enjoy the " chicken " nuggets and that kinda " junk " food every once in a while, and the only stuff I seem to be able to find up here is the Morningstar stuff that has egg whites in it. So that in itself was a frustration because, going to school full time, I just don't have time to cook every meal and I felt like I was eating the same ol stuff all the time. So why didn't I just " cheat " with a Morningstar product instead of going full fledged omni for a few meals? I don't know. I thought, in some weird way, that it would just be easier if I ate meat (I'm married to an omni but my kids are vegetarians) but it wasn't. I felt horrible physically and emotionally after I did it and I realize it was a huge mistake. Anyways, hope that answers yer question. BTW, what kind of Dr. are you? It's a response to a fuzzy, case-by-case society, a response that says " Know what? I just don't trust you to deal with any creature without inflicting suffering on it. " But the world *is* case by case, and we've all got to draw the line somewhere. > > Anyways, hope that answers yer question. LOL =) > This really ought to be a FAQ . Using computers in biochemistry. Hmm, cool. If you ever feel so inclined I'd love to hear more about it because I am still trying to figure out what exactly I want to do when I graduate. I'm getting a Chem degree and I'll be ACS certified and I'm also getting a Math degree. I'm stuck between Medical School and getting a masters (maybe PhD. later) and doing something in a lab (non-animal related obviously). I *really* want to be a medical doctor but I'm just not sure I could pull it off, considering I have 2 kids to think about...I just think that residency wouldn't be exactly fair to the kids. Anyways enough of that. =) Talis

In an intelligent society, one or two places would offer a part-time residency . Or you could get the degree, and delay the residency until your children are older? > Anyways enough of that. =) > > Talis > > > To send an email to - > >
Guest guest
> In an intelligent society, one or two places would offer a part-time > residency . Yea, but from what I've been told by a friend of mine who is a pediatrician at Phoenix Children's Hospital the people who do the part-time residency's really put in the same amount of hours as the people who do full time residency. She said " you can't leave until your work is done and most of the time you are leaving at the same times the full-time residents are leaving but you take twice as long to finish your residency " . The other thing is, I thought only certain fields offered part-time residency options. I really haven't looked *that* deep into it because, lets be honest, I'm not even *in* med school...I have some time. > Or you could get the degree, and delay the residency until your children > are older? Yea I was thinking about that but I feel that it would only be harder on them as they get older. My parents traveled *often* because my dad is part of " corporate america " and my mother owned a travel agency (she's now retired). They would be gone weeks at a time, and it was harder as I got older...of course with residency I wouldn't be gone weeks at a time. LOL Anyways like I said I have quite a bit of time, I am still just flip flopping between what I want to do and what I feel might be in the best interest of the family. Guest guest
Ian, I don't know any other vegans or vegetarians for that matter. I know that vegan choices on base are few, and the commissary doesn't carry much outside the " norm " , although I have noticed an increase in vegan choices recently. I am not all that familiar with the surrounding communities as far as all of this goes, either. *~*~*~*~Denise ~*~*~*~* Proud military wife to Dave and Homeschoolin' Mama to David~21 MAY 91 Lucas~02 AUG 98 and Griffin~09 MAY 01 Re: new member intro faerie_25 wrote: > >Hi. Guest guest
When you are in a shop and you are craving for milk just remember how it was made. Maybe even carry around a picture of a calf and a mother cow and just remember if you buy that milk you are driving the two apart. You'll be a very cold hearted person if you can still the buy the litre of milk. Which (if you're trying to go vegan) you obviously aren't. All the best! Guest guest
Congratulations!! It dosen't really matter which reason you choose to be vegan (health, animals, or enviornment), all still reap the benifits of your new diet. Just a side note--I became vegetarian over 10 years ago (when I was 13) for health and enviornmental reasons, but became a vegan last year for animal rights reasons--seems like the longer I stay with the lifestyle and be around the influence of all these wonderful people who think so much about how their lifestyle effects not only their own health but other beings and our earth-I started doing it too. Again, congratulations on the lifestyle change. It is one of the most important things you will ever do for yourself (and others)! Guest guest
That's a good suggestion. When I started to give up diary, every time I drank milk or ate cheese I thought about baby cows crying for their moms. It really did the trick for me. Also literature such as the kind you can get from PETA helps. After reading that, I did go cold turkey.
