Hello!

I am new here and just starting to become more vegetarian conscious.

I went to Borders today and looked all through the Veg.cookbooks there.

Seems that most of the Vegetarian Cookbooks have very few photos of the

dish. Are there any good Veg. Cookbooks that have photos for each recipe? I am

also interested in the recipes having the nutriant counts i.e. the carbs etc.

Thank you for your opinions.

I find it strange this obsession that many people have that their cookbooks

should have photos. When I was growing up, most cookbooks didn't have

pictures, and that didn't stop us from successfully using them. Joy of

Cooking, anyone? Mastering the Art? Pictures are nice, but really what's

important are the recipes. Who cares what the dish looks like. It'll look

like what it looks like. If it tastes great, then it was a successful dish.

I think it is ok for wanting to see what we are making looks like it does in

pictures.   It helps with a new cook to see if what they are doing

is correct.

I hardly see it as an obsession and what one cares about shouldnt be up for

being made fun of if someone else doesnt get it.

There are people who won't buy certain cookbooks because they have no pictures.

Sorry, but I think that's not only silly, but counterproductive.

YMMV.

Quite right.

My cooking often doesn't come out looking like the pictures

anyway.

One of my favorite cookbooks is one that I bought years ago

called Laurel's Kitchen. It does have hand-drawn pictures,

usually for just decorations. In a few places, the

hand-drawn pictures are used to demonstrate how to do

something.

Pat Crocker has done nothing more then to cash in on the vegan movement and she

did a terrible job of it to the point of her book making a mockery of going

vegan.

First off, there's the honey mention; while some vegans do eat it, it has no

place in an authoritative tome on vegan eating. There are no seitan recipes here

(and oddly enough, seitan is listed as a whole food, despite the fact that it's

so highly processed). There are also a limited number of tofu and tempeh

recipes. A bible is a complete work from which all else stems, and you can’t

claim completeness from a vegan standpoint by eschewing seitan and using tempeh

and tofu to such limited degree. There’s also no breakfast section, and the

desserts didn’t go to the heights of decadence that they could have.

My biggest problem with the book, though, is the Healthy Body Systems section.

It looks at everything from the immune to the musculoskeletal to the

cardiovascular system, including the diseases that can afflict them and the best

foods for combating or preventing those diseases. And in every single one, as

well as in the overall guideline to Healthy Living, Crocker recommends fish. Not

only that, fish is the #1 food in the Cardiovascular section. Mind you,

there’s no fish in any of the recipes, but there’s no place for even a

mention of fish in a vegan cookbook, much less a vegan “bible,†unless

you’re talking about a substitute.

there is absolutely no excuse for recommending fish, and doing it multiple

times, in a book with the words “vegan†and “bible†in the title.

It's insane that any vegan " bible " would recommend such things--it would be like

the organic growing bible preaching the value of pesticides or the real bible

spreading the idea of sin! It makes no sense. I would avoid this book at all

costs.

Have you tried Heidi Swansons journal/blog 101 cookbooks?

http://www.101cookbooks.com/ Full of beautiful pictures of vegetarian and

vegan foods (even when the dish itself isn't that pretty) along with

interesting stories and variations/options for the recipe. Some of the

ingredients can be a bit obscure at times, and occasionally the recipes are

long, but everything I've tried has been yummy, and I always know what it's

supposed to look like.

The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

Hi

Not a cookbook, but Every Day Food by Martha Stewart is a magazine that has

scads of recipes for veggies. Each recipe has a photo. For $10 a year you can't

go wrong.

Usually they highlight a couple of ingredients, such as grapefruit and give lots

of different ideas for getting the Five A Day into your diet.

Vegetarian Cookbooks with photos?

April
