Guest guest
What I didn't say but shoulda said was that this was a kind and thoughtful response to my query. There is indeed a problem for new vegans to find recipes that are suitable for dessert because of having to cut eggs and dairy out of the equation. BUT a little thinking and searching around, and one can find wonderful vegan recipes that let us make appropriate substitutes - soy or almond milk, for eg., and vegan buttery spreads such as Earth Balance (the best imho - and no I'm not paid or profiting from saying that LOL), egg substitutes, flax 'eggs' etc. - for the eggs and dairy we may have been used to using. This recipe for Died and Gone to Heaven Sweet Potatoes is simple and looks simply delicious - and yes would make a lovely ending to a meal The rice pudding the member suggested as an accompaniment? Non-dairy milk works fine for making that! So thanks for the heads-up. And all you new vegans out there, please do ask if you want to know how to adapt anything. We really, collectively as a group, must have thousands of years' experience in doing just that. And we love to encourage newbies and/or old-time vegans and vegetarians who want to try something new. Next time there's something really special to celebratae - all those calories *sigh* > > Love, Pat > > , Rinchen <chelosunny@> wrote: > > > > Hi > > Pat, I have no idea why I said Vegans might consider it a dessert. I guess I was thinking along the lines of some of the Asian desserts that are sweet potato or taro based. Also vegetarians can eat treats made with milk and eggs and butter which is the basis of many dishes. I guess I thought the Vegan " Larder " needed some new candidates. > > We serve it as a side dish, but like I said it tastes so decadent that it could qualify as a dessert. > > I look forward to feedback from the Roll Call. > > > >  Sunny > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > Pat <drpatsant@> > > > > Wed, March 10, 2010 7:26:57 AM > > Re: Died and Gone to Heaven Sweet Potatoes > > > >  > > > > Somehow I seem to be missing something in this discussion. Sorry if I've overlooked a message that would explain, but can you tell me why you say 'Perhaps for Vegans it should be classified as a dessert'??? The dish _is_ vegan, provided one uses Earth Balance plus vegan sugar (ie. not filtered through bone char). > > > > How do _you_ serve it, by the way? That might help us. As a side dish with other vegetarian foods? I think I would put it with something like baked tofu and some green vegetable and - yes - rice or whatever would be fine on the same plate too Not, I think, to be poured over rice, however - ???? > > > > Still wondering though why vegans would need to reclassify it as dessert if vegetarians don't. > > > > Best, > > Pat > > > > > It is sweet and spicy. Like I said it tastes so indulgent that you will want to eat it with a spoon. Perhaps for Vegans it should be classified as a dessert. > > > Rice pudding might be good. When i think of stuff going with rice I usually think of a sauce and chunks. This does not look like that. > > > > > >  Sunny > > > > > >  > > > Can you tell me is this sweet or spicy, and what does it look like....do > > > you eat it with rice??? > > > Barbra > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
