Guest guest
What I have read most about are vegans. What is wrong with being a vegetarian? (I am NOT looking for an answer) I have been a vegetarian for 25 years and happy to stay that way. Is everyone in this group a vegan? Are there any vegetarians out there? I plan on raising our 1 year old daughter a vegetarian even though I am surrounded by meat eaters who keep telling me they are going to feed her meat, in which I reply that they will lose visiting priveledges (grandparents)! In the meantime, she prefers to continue to nurse :-) Deb Royal Oak, Michigan ______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

It isn't a big deal to me that he be, I did it mainly for the health reasons. I plan on raising my son (7 1/2 months) to at least be vegetarian. Guest guest
Deb, This group is not strictly comprised of vegans. While my wife and I were vegan for years, we reverted to being organic ovo-lacto vegetarians when our son was born. Although this change was not absolutley necessary, we found it to be more practical for us. Once our son gets alittle older we will likely emphasize more vegan options. Personally, I feel any commitment to avoid animal products (whether vegan, vegetarian, or " part-time " vegetarian) is a step in the right direction and perhaps a stepping stone to greater avoidance in the future. Re your child's grandparents, I encourage you to stick to your convictions. They will get the message sooner or later especially if it costs them visitation time. Guest guest
Hi Deb: I am a vegetarian and am raising my 10-year-old son that way too. I'd like to be a vegan some day because as one speaker at the recent World Vegetarian Congress said " Meat, milk, veal - are all part of the same damn industry " . Dairy cows are turned into McDonald's hamburgers when their milk production falls off. Laying hens become stewing hens when their egg production declines. Male chicks are killed and the ones allowed to live are " de-beaked " in a heartless attempt to prevent chickens from damaging each other when crammed together into tiny cages. I try to avoid eggs, but cheese is very difficult to give up. I don't think there's a perfect answer because I am a single parent with a full-time career, a child who plays lots of evening and weekend sports, a wonderful boyfriend, a volunteer position on our vegetarian association, but not a lot of time for healthful meal preparation. I know there are inconsistencies in this rationalization but being a vegetarian is where I'm at right now. I don't think anyone should negatively judge vegetarians because we're not as " pure " as vegans in our commitment to ending animal suffering. At least we're doing something about our convictions and taking a moral stance. I applaud you Deb for speaking out about being in the minority in this newsgroup. I'd like to hear from other vegetarians too. By the way, as time goes on and they see how healthy your child is, grandparents are likely soften in their hostility towards the choice you're making for your child. After all, they made choices for their children and you will make choices in the best interest of yours. They'll have to accept your decision to raise your child as a vegetarian because they won't want to lose you both over something that is none of their business. deb proen wrote: > > What I have read most about are vegans.
