Guest guest
This may sound odd but my son (4) has been a picky eatter since birth. He has always been very selective about which food he will or will not eat. His latest thing is not eatting anything messy or gooey. He only wants to eat things of the dry crunchy variety. His Dr sayes he is fine but I can't seen to think of any new things to feed him. He loves bagels, dry cereal, crackers, things like that. Sometimes burritos, tater tots, and french fries. It's making us a little crazy, that he won't eat very much. We used to be able to sneak vegetables in his food but not anymore. He has a container of Soy Dream original enriched every day and 3-4 cups of white grape juice. I don't really think his liquid intake is too high. It's been that way for quite a while and he used to eat more and a larger variety of foods. So If anyone has any ideas for snacks that might contain say vegetables that don't appear to be vegetables. Or anything else nutritous and not messy that he can pick up to eat. PLEASE let me know. Thanks, Summer
Guest guest
Summer, My daughter is also 4. She enjoys different kinds of nut butters like almond butter, tahini, cashew butter or PB stuffed into celery or spread with all fruit jelly on a flattened piece of bread and rolled up. Carrot sticks cut into flat strips are good dippers, into hummus or bean dip. We use a non-dairy cream cheese that is good spread on whole grain toasted bagels, bread or crackers and then top with dried fruits (dates, raisins, figs and whatever nuts we have). Home made granola on top of soy yogurt is a big hit too. (I'll share my granola recipe if you want it) I would definitely get rid of the juice. It really decreases their appetites and is full of empty calories. Water is great and much healthier. I have noticed that if my daughter drinks juice in the am, say when she's out with other kids, her normally excellent appetite for lunch really goes down. I hope this helps, Lisa from Maryland 1 daughter, Hope- vegan since birth husband - vegan at home and usually but not always out - <tasroe Friday, July 28, 2000 12:09 PM Kid Snacks/eating habits > This may sound odd but my son (4) has been a picky eatter since > birth. Guest guest
Try the entire line of meat-substitute products from Worthington are great and can be cooked a bit longer for more " crunchiness " . He won't touch the stuff. I tried giving him peanut butter & jelly, as well as many other versions of it. It's always the same thing, he spits it out and covers his face when I try to give him something else, saying no no no no. Carrot sticks cut > into flat strips are good dippers, into hummus or bean dip. I'll try the carrots, although he is not fond of gooey things. Last night he spent most of diner trying to get the mashed potatoes off his fork without touching them. > We use a non-dairy cream cheese that is good spread on whole grain toasted > bagels, bread or crackers and then top with dried fruits (dates, raisins, > figs and whatever nuts we have). > Home made granola on top of soy yogurt is a big hit too. Actually the stuff we get is 100% juice and gives him the vitamin C that he dosen't get much of anywhere else, and it's the only fruit he will consume. > I have noticed that if my daughter drinks juice in the am, say when she's > out with other kids, her normally excellent appetite for lunch really goes > down. > I hope this helps, > > Lisa from Maryland > 1 daughter, Hope- vegan since birth > husband - vegan at home and usually but not always out > Thank You for the input and ideas. If you can not come up with a veggie that he thinks is worth eating how about fruit, that is cut small so he can use a tooth pick or spear or sword or very fancy new fork.Maybe some dip.I think feeding little people is marketing. Last year DD loved to eat salads told Grandma to also eat up her live food. Two weeks later she tells me the worst thing in the world is salad she did not even want to here the name. The rest of us kept on eating ours and she started back up.I do not get to worried about her wanting to start with food hang ups. Many thing can be made to be nutritious like Fries if made at home in the oven RainingStar
Guest guest
Hi, Summer! Maybe Vruit drinks are a possibility for your son. The kind we have on hand right now contains apple, pineapple, carrot juice as well as " natural flavors, vitamin C, beta-carotene. " The manufacturer is American Soy Products, Inc. from Michigan. Good luck! -Susan ---------- > tasroe > > Kid Snacks/eating habits > Friday, July 28, 2000 12:09 PM > > This may sound odd but my son (4) has been a picky eatter since > birth. I make him a smoothie every day and add a teaspoon of spirulina powder to it - he loves it! And gets his greens...:-) Here is how I make it for him: 1 frozen banana 1 1/2 cups of rice milk 1 big tablespoon of almond butter 1 teaspoon of spirulina Good luck! Guest guest
And just in case anyone is wondering, I just was in contact with the manufacturer (doing research for our vegan business) and they assured me that the " natural flavors " in all the Vruit drinks are from vegetable sources. Guest guest
What about vegetable patties, croquettes? I have come across many such vegetarian fried balls in Indian cuisine. They call them cutlets, and they are delicious. They typically have potatoes and other vegetables finely shredded, then mixed together with some binding agent (not egg, don't worry) then patted into shape and fried (or you can try the oven, for a healthier snack). Middle Eastern cuisine has falafel, which are basically ground chickpeas with herbs and spices, just soaked in some recipes, boiled in some others. Delicious. Guest guest
Well, I tried the apple/carrot, and I love it. Alex on the other hand does not. I am going to try all the other flavors though and see if perhaps he might like one of those. Summer , " Susan Petrie " <spetrie@b...> wrote: > Hi, Summer!
