Guest guest
Hi, I just joined this list. I am probably the only one here who is not vegetarian yet but my hope is to ease my family into it over the next few months. I have an online business that has caused me to study healthly lifestyles more than usual and the more I read the more I want to consider the vegetarian lifestyle. To be completely honest, I can't yet see cutting out milk, egg, and ocean fish products right now but I think red and white meat will be relatively easy to cut out. For years, my favorite cookbook has been the occasional vegetarian but I want to go beyond the occasional thing. I don't really know how to ensure my children get proper nutrition or to get food they will eat it so that is why I'm here. I hope I am welcome even though I'm not really a vegetarian yet. I'm just want to be one. One other thing is that recently I've lost the taste for meat. Now I haven't been consuming much lately but the smell of luchmeat/sausage makes me ill. Have any of you had that happen after being a meat eater? It all seems really strange to me. I was planning to cut it out but I didn't expect to start hating the smell of it. Anyway, last but not least, my computer is being upgraded so after I check my email in a few hours I won't be back on until later next week so please don't be offended if I don't respond right away. Guest guest
Dawn, during my first pregnancy (12 years ago...), I lost all taste for meat also, and found it very strange, having grown up eating flesh. Even after Carmen was born, I felt ill when I smelled it cooking, and realized that my body was telling me something! My kids are vegetarian; the baby (now almost 3) has never eaten meat. My husband does, but I don't find it hard to explain to the kids; as long as I am calm and convinced (not reacting), they understand with their heads and hearts that even Daddy who they love has no counter-argument. My 2 year old still doesn't really believe that people actually EAT meat... she thinks it's a bit of a sick joke. 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes is a great " starter " cookbook, although it relies a lot on cheese and dairy (I substitute soy cheese and milk). Marilyn Diamonds Fit for Life is another great resource for going from occasional to every day. It's a bit harder packing lunch boxes with healthy lunches, but not impossible. We also don't eat white or brown sugar (bone char) or white flour, and avoid processed foods, so the kids have learned to very flexible with Mama's crazy dinner and lunch ideas! Also, sharing what my co-worker's say to and think of me makes it easier for my 12 year old to deal with the kids who react to her diet. Kids and adults alike feel very threatened and guilty when they perceive that you are in the right! I think that's long enough for my first real post ;-} Karen > > MeSeah [Meseah] > Wednesday, August 02, 2000 11:58 AM > > Hi, I'm new, send me tips :-) > > > Hi, I just joined this list.
