History of Vegetarianism??

Today we visited the recreation of William Penn's manor. [And was it ever HOT!] During the tour, they discussed the process of making soap using animal fat. I saw my daughter cringe. Afterwards I told her that as the tour guide discussed the process, I had wondered when vegetarianism became popular. I mean in 1700 one had limited choices regarding the use of animal products. There were probably few options.

This is just a curiousity question, does anyone know? My daughter told me that she read somewhere that vegetarianism is a fairly recent thing.

Sue, and everybody else who might be interested

why don't you try to find that wonderful book, by Colin Spencer, called " The

Heretic's feast " ? (Paperback - April 1996) They sell it at Amazon com for:

$18.36 but it's worth it. It starts with prehistoric man, goes into detail

into the argument of whether humankind was meant to be vegetarian or not and

how the ice age made it turn to meat, goes on to explore ancient

civilizations and religions and why some of them were so reluctant to

condone it -leaving it to the more heretic sects- up to the modern times. I

found it fascinating reading, and nobody is ever going to catch you without

an answer anymore.
