Vegetarianism & Veganism

Can we please try to stay with the topic? I realize that everyone has their

own opinions about immunization, but this is really not relavant on this

message board (unless the arguement involves the fact that the contents of

vaccines are not vegetarian). I don't want to offend anyone, but there are

plenty of other places to research and debate immunizations, and I'd like to

see more posts about vegetarian and vegan children.

I agree. I'm the one who started the whole topic during the discussion

about finding a pediatrician who supports our food choices for our

children.

You raised a good point about the ingredients in vaccines, some of which

are animal-derived. Hydrolyzed gelatin is one ingredient in a number of

vaccines; calf serum is used in Lederle's OPV (oral Polio); and 'washed

sheep red blood cells' and 'porcine (pig) pancreatic hydrolysate of casein'

are in DPT from SmithKline Beecham. The Rotavirus vaccine (which was

recalled due to safety reasons) was produced using 1 rhesus monkey

rotavirus, 3 rhesus-human viruses, and fetal bovine serum, among the long

list of ingredients. Also, many of the viruses are produced/grown in

mediums such as chick embryos (some MMR), monkey kidney cell cultures (IPV

and OPV), and even human diploid cells that originate from human aborted

fetal tissue (Chicken Pox, some MMR combinations). Other ingredients also

include a multiple assortment of antibiotics, formaldehyde, aluminum, and

thimerosal (mercury). E-mail me personally for the full list.

As a vegan parent, this stuff concerns me--especially the possibility of

animal DNA being injected into my children. Not to mention the millions of

animals that have suffered and died as a result of all the testing and use

of their various organs and such.

But, let's move on and stick to the topic!

I agree, there are even a few other that discuss raising veg

kids that are anti-vaccine. It seems that here it is a divided issue

so perhaps we should just drop it and move on to something else. I

personally am getting very, very tired of this topic, and think we

could find more constructive, and interesting things to discuss.
