Guest guest
Hello everyone! I am a new member and have 2 kids (age 6 & 2, both vegan since birth). We just started homeschooling and use Waldorf inspired curriculum; however, I feel somewhat torn as the Waldorf philosophy incorporates many animal based products...(the philosophy states that children will be more connected with materials that have had a life like beeswax crayons, wool, silk, mohair for Waldorf doll hair, etc). Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and any comments/suggestions! Thanks, Jessica
Guest guest
Have you ever heard of Charlotte Mason? She was a teacher in England, she lived from 1842 - 1923. Her homeschooling methode is *very* good in my opinion. I live in Germany at the time and have to send my daughter to school, but I " dual school " her according to the Charlotte Mason methode. I have heard that her methode has a lot in common with the Waldorf methode in a way and it is also different in another way. Here is a link you can check out, if you need more info let me know. http://home.att.net/~bandcparker/cmlinks.html Michaela J.Metz schrieb: > > Hello everyone! > I am a new member and have 2 kids (age 6 & 2, both vegan since > birth). > We just started homeschooling and use Waldorf inspired curriculum; > however, I feel somewhat torn as the Waldorf philosophy incorporates > many animal based products...(the philosophy states that children > will > be more connected with materials that have had a life like beeswax > crayons, wool, silk, mohair for Waldorf doll hair, etc). Guest guest
Hi Jessica, I am a vegan with a vegetarian child (age 5) attending a Waldorf-Inspired school. We have several vegan families in the school as well. The vegans use the beeswax, mohair, etc., but draw the line with certain things like collecting eggs from hens on a farm field trip, etc. I found, in general, the school to be very flexible in supporting the various needs of the different families. For example, on bread making day, they provide butter as well as a vegan butter alternative. For me, although some of the materials bother me (like making deerskin pouches), I find that it is a better alternative to making/using plastic and media items. Regarding the use of non-vegan items, I also will discuss these issues with my daughter as they come up. We are also an interfaith family and my husband is not a vegetarian, so we talk a lot in our house about tolerance and different belief systems. So, for us, vegan diets and Waldorf education conflicts is just another one of those issues. I feel, in general, the Waldorf principles are so positive and refreshing from mainstream education. It is not a perfect world! Lisa Furman Cott
