Guest guest
I noticed the mcdonalds thread starting and thought I would provide the information we have. I am currently working on updating our Guide to Fast Food, which should be done within a month. THis is the info we have about the fries: McDonald's wrote to us in April 1996 that in Canada, their French fries are parfried and cooked " in a blend of beef tallow and cottonseed oil, " both by their supplier and at the restaurant. McDonald's also then wrote " [t]he primary cooking oils used in McDonald's restaurants around the world include cottonseed, tallow, soybean, and corn oils. " In the United States, both the parfrying process by their supplier and the preparation at the restaurant is done in vegetable oil. The fries are parfried in soybean oil and later cooked in a blend of corn and soybean oils. In February 1997, McDonald's informed us by telephone that the natural flavor in their French fries is a " beef product. " At that time, they declined to send us this information in writing. In July 1997, McDonald's sent us a fax stating that " [t]he natural flavor used in French fries is from an animal source. " McDonald's reports that the fries are cooked in vegetable oil apart from the meat/seafood products. According to their February 1997 Nutrition Facts brochure, the French fries are cooked in a blend of soybean and corn oils, TBHQ (a synthetic antioxidant), citric acid, dimethylpolysiloxane (a synthetic antifoaming agent), and natural flavor. McDonald's informed us by fax in July 1997 that " [t]he natural flavor used in the vegetable oil for French fries is from an animal source. We recieved information for the 2000 update from McDonalds and they gave no indication that the recipe has changed. Davida The VRG
