Guest guest
hi everyone, i have been a lurker in this group so far, but i noticed no one had replied to this email, at least not to the whole group, and i thought it might be important, i am reading the book Becoming Vegan by Davis and Melina, there is a small section toward the end about eating disorders, says: " Research indicates that as many as 50% of those suffering from anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa are vegetarian. .... ....it is important to consider which came first, the vegetarian diet or the eating disorder. Research indicates that the large majority of vegetarian or vegan anorexics and bulimics chose this eating pattern after the onset of their desease. The " restricted " vegetarian or vegan eating pattern legitimizes the removal of numerous high-fat, energy-dense foods such as meat, eggs, cheese, ice cream, sour cream, whipping cream and butter.... " also, of the four people i know who have suffered from an eating disorder, two are vegetarian (though they have recovered from the illness so it is probably unrelated), one claimed to be vegan (very obviously as a form of food deprivation) and the other was vegetarian during the time she was ill, so while i cant say anything about your niece as i dont know her and wouldnt be qualified to do so anyway, you might want to pay special attention to whether your niece will eat high-fat vegetarian foods like nuts, nut butters, avocados, cheese, milk, ice-cream, butter, eggs, and if she is getting enough calories total i hope she is choosing vegetarianism for better reasons but it is important to be aware that she might not be, best of luck, linda > Mon, 25 Dec 2000 16:49:52 -0500 > " Karen McCollough " <kkmc > Niece interested in Vegetarianism > > My niece who lives 3 hours away from me is very > interested in vegetarianism. > She is on the verge of those difficult years, > though, she's going to be 13 > in just a few days, and so it's hard to interpret > the true motivations > behind her interest. .... my sister, > her mother, is very > worried about her being too skinny and too obsessed > with calorie and fat > counting.
